오늘은 추수감사주일입니다. 캐나다 감사주일은 우리나라의 추석과 비슷합니다. 날도 비슷하여 우리교회에서는 추석은 그냥 지나가고 추수감사절에 식사를 합니다.

추수감사절은 이름처럼 지난 한 해동안 풍성한 열매를 허락하신 것을 하나님께 감사하는 날입니다. 캐나다에서는 추수감사절이 10월 둘째 월요일인데 교회는 추수감사절 전날 일요일을 추수감사주일로 지키고 있습니다. 특별히 추수감사헌금으로 감사를 표시합니다.

미국에도 추수감사절이 있습니다. 미국은 캐나다보다 날씨가 따듯해서 그런지 11월 네번째 목요일입니다. 종교의 자유를 찾아 청교도들이 영국에서 메이플라워를 타고 미국에 왔습니다. 그들이 한 해를 무사히 보내고 나서, 도와준 원주민들을 초대해서 잔치를 연 것에서 유래되었다고 합니다. 그래서 미국 추수감사절은 캐나다와 비교해서 크리스찬 배경이 강합니다.

요새는 10월에 추수감사절보다 10월 31일인 할로윈에 더 관심이 많은 것 같습니다. 추수감사절을 알 수 있는 표시로는 그로서리의 칠면조와 햄 광고 정도입니다. 사실 칠면조와 햄도 미국에서 먹는 관습이 있지, 캐나다는 별로인 것 같습니다. 대조적으로, 할로윈 때 나누어 주는 캔디 광고는 벌써 차고 넘칩니다. 그로서리마다 호박이 쌓여 있습니다.

인간의 이런 모습을 보면서 하나님께서 조금 섭섭하실 것 같습니다. 올 한해동안 하나님께서 베푸신 은혜가 너무 많은데, 우리는 감사는 생략하고 불평이 앞서지는 않았는지 생각해 봅니다. 세상에 눈을 돌리면서 비교와 원망이 가득하지는 않았는지 반성이 됩니다.

우리는 이미 갖고 있는 것이나 받은 것에 익숙해져서 당연하게 여기는 경향이 있습니다. 반대로 조금 부족하거나 갖고 있지 않은 것은 크게 느껴서 불평하거나 원망하곤 합니다. 이번 추수감사절에는 지금 가지고 있는 것과 올해 받은 것에 감사하는 시간을 가졌으면 좋겠습니다. 잘 생각해 보면 감사할 것이 많습니다.

특별히 가족에 대해 감사하기 바랍니다. 가까이 있는 가족뿐 아니라 멀리 있는 가족도 생각하면서 그들 때문에 감사할 것이 무엇인지 생각해보면 감사할 것이 너무 많다는 것을 발견할 것입니다. 그래서 가족에게 감사하고 하나님께도 감사하고, 무엇보다도 감사를 통해 영혼이 풍성해지는 추수감사절이 되기 바랍니다.

Today is Thanksgiving Sunday. Thanksgiving Sunday in Canada is similar to Chuseok in Korea. The days are similar, so in our church, Chuseok just passes by and we eat on Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving, as the name suggests, is a day to give thanks to God for the abundant fruits of the past year. In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October, and the church celebrates Thanksgiving Sunday on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. We show our gratitude with a special thanksgiving offering.

There is also a Thanksgiving in the United States. The weather in the U.S. is warmer than in Canada, so it's the fourth Thursday in November. In search of religious freedom, the Puritans came to America on the Mayflower from England. It is said that after they had made it through the year safely, they would invite the natives who helped them to a feast. That's why Thanksgiving in the U.S. has a strong Christian background compared to Canada.

In October people seem to be more interested in Halloween, which is October 31, than Thanksgiving. A sign of Thanksgiving is the grocery's turkey and ham commercials. In fact, turkey and ham are more customary in the United States than in Canada. In contrast, Halloween candy ads are already overflowing. Each grocery store is stacked with pumpkins.

Seeing this kind of human being, God must be a little sad. There is so much grace that God has bestowed upon us this year, and we wonder if we have omitted gratitude and complained about it. As I look at the world, I reflect on whether I was full of comparisons and resentments.

We tend to become so accustomed to what we already have or what we have received that we take for granted. On the other hand, if we are a little lacking or do not have, we feel that it is too lacking, so we often complain or resent. This Thanksgiving, I hope we take a moment to be grateful for what we have and what we have received this year. If you think about it, you will realize that you have a lot to be thankful for.

Especially, be grateful for your family. If you think about your family near as well as far as your family and look on what you have to be grateful for because of them, you will find that you have so much to be thankful for. So I want you to be grateful to your family, thank God, and most of all, may it be a Thanksgiving that enriches your soul through thanksgiving.
