명분과 실리 사이

1984년에 경영학 석사과정을 하러 미국 시애틀에 있는 와싱턴 대학(The University of Washington)에 유학을 왔습니다. 그해 와싱턴 대학이 미식축구 미국 랭킹 1-2위를 다투고 있어서 그랬는지, 미식축구에 대한 열기를 느낄 수 있었습니다.

미국은 넓기 때문에 지역별로 컨퍼런스를 만들어서 게임을 갖습니다 (우리가 잘 아는 아이비리그도 그중 하나입니다). 와싱턴 대학은 PAC 10이라는 컨퍼런스에 속해 있었는데, 태평양 연안에 있는 큰 대학교 10 개가 회원입니다. 와싱턴 주의 주림대학 2 개, 오레곤주의 주립대학 2 개, 아리조나주의 주립대학 2 개, 그리고 캘리포니아에서 4 개 대학(버클리, 스탠포드, UCLA, USC)입니다.

제가 박사학위를 받은 아이오와 대학은 BIG 10 컨퍼런스에 소속되어 있었습니다. 미국 중서부에 있는 큰 대학 10 개가 회원 대학입니다. BIG 10은 PAC 10과 라이벌 컨퍼런스로서, 연초에 미식축구 우승팀끼리 Rose Bowl에서 경기를 가졌습니다.

몇 년 전부터 주위 큰 대학교들이 BIG 10에 합류해서 14 개 대학이 되었는데, 이름은 여전히 BIG 10이었습니다(^^). 올해에는 PAC 10에 속했던 UCLA와 USC와 오레곤 대학과 와싱턴 대학등 네 개 대학이 BIG 10에 합류해서 18개 대학이 되었습니다 (여전히 이름은 BIG 10^^).

PAC 10에서 합류한 대학들이 미식축구를 잘하는 대학인 것을 보면, TV 중계권등 돈 때문인 것 같습니다. 그래도 그렇지, 거리가 먼 라이벌 컨퍼런스로 옮기는 것은 좀 아닌 것 같습니다. 그리고 18 개 대학이 있는데, 여전히 이름이 BIG 10인 것도 이상합니다.

PAC 10은 어떻게 되있는지 궁금해서 찾아 보았더니, 거기는 더 가관이었습니다. 몇 년 전에 두 학교를 더해서 PAC 12가 되었습니다. (여기는 그래도 이름을 제대로 바꿨네요~~). 지금은 두 학교만 남았는데, 다른 대학들이 각자 살 길을 찾아 다른 컨퍼런스로 떠났기 때문입니다.

미국은 그래도 돈 보다는 전통을 중요하게 여긴다고 생각했는데, 그게 아니었습니다. 과거에는 그랬는지 모르지만, 지금은 전통보다는 돈을 더 중요하게 생각하는 것 같습니다.

저같이 명분을 중요하게 생각하는 사람은 실리를 따르는 이런 세태가 당황스럽습니다. “내가 너무 과거 사람인가? 이 세상을 이해하지 못하고 있는가? 시류를 따르지는 않아도, 나도 시류에 맞추어서 목회를 해야 하는가?” 많은 생각이 듭니다.

Between Cause and Practicality

In 1984, I came to The University of Washington in Seattle to pursue a master's degree in business administration. Because the University of Washington was battling for the No. 1-2 American football rankings that year, and I could feel the enthusiasm for American football.

Because U.S. is big, universities form conferences in the region and have games (the Ivy League we know is one of them). The University of Washington was part of a conference called PAC 10, which includes 10 large universities on the Pacific Coast. There are two state universities in Washington, two in Oregon, two in Arizona, and four universities in California (Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, and USC).

The University of Iowa, where I got my Ph.D., was part of the BIG 10 conference. Ten large universities in the Midwest are member universities. The BIG 10 is a rival conference to PAC 10, and the American football champions in the two conference play in the Rose Bowl at the beginning of the year.

A few years ago, the big universities around joined the BIG 10 and became 14 universities, but the name were still the BIG 10. This year, four universities — UCLA,USC, the University of Oregon and the University of Washington — joined the BIG 10 — bringing the total number of PAC 10 universities to 18 (still called the BIG 10^^).

I don't know the exact reason, but I think it's because of the money that TV rights bring as those new universities are American football powerhouse. Still, I don't think it makes sense to move to a distant rivalry conference. And it's also strange that there are 18 universities, and they are still named the BIG 10.

I was curious about what happened to the PAC 10, so I looked it up, and it was more strange. A few years ago, it added two schools to become PAC 12. (it changed the name at least~~). Now there are only two schools left, as other universities have gone their own way to other conferences.

I thought the U.S. was more about tradition than money, but that wasn't the case. I don't know if it was the case in the past, but now it seems that money is more important than tradition.

For someone like me who cares about causes, I am embarrassed by the world that follows practicality. "Am I too old? Do I not understand the World? Although I don't follow the world, should I consider the world in my ministry?" I have many thoughts.
