침례식에 대하여

우리 교회는 침례교회라서 세례 대신 침례를 줍니다. 세례와 침례는 의미는 같지만 형식이 다릅니다. 세례는 구원을 죄가 씻어진다는 의미로 보고 물을 머리에 뿌립니다. 침례는 구원을 옛사람이 죽었다가 다시 태어난다는 의미로 보고 몸이 물에 들어갔다가 나옵니다. 성경에 보면 구원받은 사람들에게 침례를 베풀었고, 예외적으로 병자등에게 세례를 베풀었는데, 시간이 지나면서 예외가 정상이 된 것입니다.

우리 교회에 와서 예수님을 믿은 사람들은 당연히 침례를 받아야 하지만 다음과 같은 경우에 있는 분들도 침례 받기를 추천합니다.

먼저 유아세례를 받은 사람입니다. 유아세례는 아기일 때 세례를 주는 것오로, 믿음의 고백이 없이 세례를 주는 것입니다. 나중에 커서 믿음을 고백하면 ‘입교’라는 형식을 거칩니다. 그러나 성경에 보면 예수님을 믿은 사람이 세(침)례를 받습니다. 그래서 유아세례를 받고 입교를 거친 사람은 다시 침례를 받는 것을 고려해 보기 바랍니다.

둘째로, 예수님을 영접하지 않은 상테로 세례를 받은 사람입니다. 많은 교회에서 예수님을 영접했는지 제대로 확인을 하지 않고 세례를 받으라고 합니다. 그런 사람들 중에 우리 교회에 와서 예수영접모임을 통해 예수님을 정식으로 영접하는 분들이 있습니다. 아까도 얘기했지만, 세(침)례는 예수님을 영접한 사람이 받는 것이기 때문에, 과거에 세례를 받았지만 우리 교회에서 예수님을 영접한 분들은 침례 받기를 추천합니다. 저도 장로교회에서 세례를 받았지만, 나중에 침례교회에서 정식으로 예수님을 영접한 다음에 다시 침례를 받았습니다.

참고로 세례와 비교해서 침례는 몇가지 장점이 있습니다. 먼저 세례를 받을 때 세례 문답이 있지만, 침례를 받을 때에는 침례 문답 뿐 아니라 침례 간증이 있습니다. 이것은 과거 나의 모습을 고백하고 미래에 어떻게 살 것인지 하나님께 고백하는 시간입니다. 그리고 침례간증은 기존 성도님들에게 자신의 신앙을 고백하면서 교회의 일원으로 받아들여 달라고 요청하는 것입니다. 성도들은 침례간증을 듣고 침례받는 사람을 교회의 일원으로 받아들입니다.

둘째, 세례와 비교해서 침례는 우리가 구원받을 때 일어나는 영적인 변화를 더 잘 나타냅니다. 세례는 죄가 씻어진다는 것을 보여주지만, 침례는 우리가 죽고, 장사지내고, 다시 살아나는 모습을 보입니다. 잠시 물 속에 들어 갔다가 나오지만, 이런 과정을 통해 내가 정말 구원받았다는 것을 경험했다는 분들이 많습니다.

Regarding Baptism

Our church is a Baptist church, so we baptize instead of sprinkling. Sprinkling and baptism have the same meaning, but they have different forms. Sprinkling sees salvation as the washing away of sins and sprinkles water on the head. Baptism sees salvation as the death of the old person and rebirth, and the body enters and exits the water. In the Bible, those who were saved were baptized, and on exception the sick were baptized. As time passed, exceptions became the norm.

Those who come to our church and believe in Jesus should be baptized, but we encourage those who are in the following situations to be baptized:

First of all, those who were sprinkled as an infant. Infant baptism is the ,sprinkling of a baby, baptism without a profession of faith. Later, when they grow and profess faith, they go through a form called "confirmation." However, according to the Bible, those who believe in Jesus are given baptism. Therefore, those who were sprinkled as infants and had confirmations later should consider being baptized again.

Second, those baptized when they had not believed Jesus. Many churches ask members to be baptized without properly confirming that they have received Jesus. Some of them come to our church and formally receive Jesus through the Gospel Presentation Meeting. As I mentioned before, baptism is given to those who have received Jesus, so I recommend that those who have been baptized in the past but have received Jesus in our church be baptized. I was sprinkled in the Presbyterian Church, but later I was baptized again after I formally accepted Jesus in the Baptist church.

Note that compared to sprinkling, baptism has several advantages. First, there is the catechism at sprinkling, but at the time of baptism there is not only the baptismal catechism but also the baptismal testimony. This is a time to confess to God who you were in the past and how you will live in the future. And the baptismal testimony is a confession of one's faith and a request to be accepted as a member of the church. The current members hear the baptismal testimony and accept the person being baptized as a member of the church.

Second, compared to sprinkling, baptism is more indicative of the spiritual changes that occur when we are saved. Sprinkling shows that sins are washed away, but baptism shows us dying, being buried, and being raised again. By going in and out of the water for a while, many people feel that they are truly saved through this process.
