무엇이 되느냐보다 어떻게 사느냐가 더 중요

요새도 그러는지 모르지만 제가 어렸을 때에는 장래 희망이 무엇인지 꼭 물어보았습니다. 누구는 대통령이 장래 희망이라고 하고, 장군이나 과학자라고 한 것이 기억납니다. 저는 별로 야망(?)이 없어서 그런지 무엇이 되고 싶은 것이 없었습니다.

고등학교 때에 문과로 정한 후에는 법대나 경영대를 가려고 했습니다. 무엇이 되겠다는 목표가 있던 것이 아닙니다. 문과의 다른 과들인 영문과 같은 어학계열이나 사회학과 같은 인문계열, 그리고 사범대학 쪽에는 관심이 없었기 때문입니다. 또 법대나 상대를 가면 고시를 보든가 기업에 취직해서 세상적으로 무난하게(?) 살 수 있을 거라고 생각했기 때문입니다.

결국 경영대를 갔는데, 가서 보니 기업에 취직하면 부장까지는 올라갈 수 있고 잘 하면 임원이 될텐데 그것도 별로 매력적이지 않았습니다. 그래서 회계사 공부를 했는데 공부를 해보니까 일생동안 숫자를 보면서 살아야 하는 회의가 들으서 그만두었습니다.

결국 교수가 되기로 하고 유학을 준비했습니다. 교수를 하려면 경영학 중에서 세부 전공을 정해야 했습니다. 처음에는 재무학을 하려고 했는데, 주위에서 그것은 전공하는 사람이 많아서 교수가 되기 힘들다고 했습니다. 그래서 제 적성에 맞는 것 중에서 회계학으로 정했습니다 (회계사 공부를 그만두었는데^^)

미국에 유학을 와서 열심히 공부해서 결국 회계학 교수가 되었습니다. 그러다가 생각하지도 않게 목사가 되었고, 이제 목사로서 은퇴를 하게 되었습니다. 돌아보니까 되고 싶은 대로 되지 않는 것이 인생인 것 같습니다.

또 하나 깨달은 것은 무엇이 되는 냐보다 어떻게 사느냐가 더 중요하다는 것입니다. 대통령이 꿈인 사람이 대통령이 되면 성공한 것입니다. 그런데 우리나라 대통령 중에 성공한 대통령을 꼽으라면 꼽기 힘든 것이 현실입니다. 대통령이 되는 것보다 어떻게 대통력직을 수행하는지가 훨씬 더 중요하다는 말입니다.

세상에는 직업이 많고 대부분의 직업이 필요합니다. 세상적으로 부러워하는 직업을 가져도 성공한 인생이 아니고 세상적으로 부러워하는 직업을 갖지 못해도 실패한 인생이 아닙니다. 중요한 것은 자기 직업을 성공적으로 수행하는 것입니다.

하나님게 순종하면서 최선을 다하다 보면 하나님께서 원하시는 직업을 가질 것입니다. 하나님께서 인도하시는 직업은 세상의 기준과 다르게 평가되어야 합니다. 그러나 그 직업을 잘 수행하면 성공적인 인생을 사는 것입니다.

How you live is more important than what you become.

I don't know if it's still the same these days, but when I was young, I was always asked what my future dream was. I remember some people saying they wanted to be president, others a general, and others a scientist. I didn't really have any ambitions(?), so I didn't know what I wanted to be.

After deciding on liberal arts in high school, I planned to go to law school or business school. I didn't have a goal of what I wanted to become. I wasn't interested in other literlature departments like English, humanities like sociology, or teachers' colleges. Also, I thought that if I went to law school or business school, I would be able to take the bar exam or get a job at a company and live an adequate(?) life.

In the end, I went to business school, but when I got there, I saw that if I got a job at a company, I could get promoted to manager, and if I did well, I could become an executive, but that didn't seem very appealing. So I studied to be an accountant, but after studying, I started to feel skeptical that I would have to spend my whole life looking at numbers, so I quit.

In the end, I decided to become a professor and prepared to study abroad. To become a professor, I had to choose a specific major in business administration. At first, I wanted to study finance, but people around me said that it would be difficult to become a professor because there were many people who were majoring it. So I decided on accounting, which suited my aptitude (I stopped studying to be an accountant^^).

I came to the U.S. to study abroad and studied hard, eventually became an accounting professor. Then, unexpectedly, I became a pastor, and now I would retire as a pastor. As I look back, I think that life is not always the way you want it to be.

Another thing I realized is that how you live is more important than what you become. If a person who dreams of becoming president becomes president, it is a success. However, if you were to choose a successful president among our country's presidents, it would be difficult to choose one. This means that how you carry out the office of president is much more important than becoming president.

There are many jobs in the world, and most jobs are necessary. Even if you have a job that the world envies, you are not a success, and even if you do not have a job that the world envies, you are not a failure. The important thing is to successfully perform your job.

If you obey God and do your best, you will have the job that God wants. The job that God leads you to is valued differently from the world's standards. However, if you do that job well, you will live a successful life.
