동사 목사의 여정과 준비
저는 2023년 10월 15일 담임목사 청빙 투표를 통해 동사목사가 되었습니다. 당시 담임목사님께서는 2026년 6월 말 은퇴를 계획하고 계셨기에 동사목사 기간을 2년 6개월로 예상하고 있었습니다. 그러나 최근 담임목사님께서 은퇴 시기를 2025년 12월로 조정하시면서, 동사목사로서의 기간이 예상보다 짧아졌습니다.
최근 교회에 새롭게 오신 분들 가운데 동사목사의 역할에 대해 궁금해하시는 분들이 계십니다. 몇 분이 저에게 "동사목사가 무엇인가요?" 질문하셨습니다. 부목사는 담임목사를 돕는 역할이라면, 동사목사는 자신만의 사역을 맡아 책임을 지며, 담임목사가 하는 일을 경험하며 인수인계 과정을 거치는 직책입니다.
동사목사로서 저는 2024년 전반기에 2022년 여름부터 사역해 온 청소년 사역과 찬양 사역, 그리고 3개월에 한 번 장년 주일 설교를 담당하며 새벽기도회를 인도했습니다. 이후 2024년 9월부터는 청소년 사역과 찬양 사역을 내려놓고 장년 사역으로 이동하였습니다. 또한, 영주권 신청을 위한 불어 시험을 준비하기 위해 담임목사님과 운영위원회의 배려로 4개월 동안 목장 사역만 맡으며 공부할 시간을 가졌습니다. 그 결과 불어 듣기 시험에서는 B2를 받았습니다. 그런데 말하기 시험에서는 B1을 받아 재시험을 준비하고 있습니다.
그래서 어찌 보면 2025년부터 본격적인 동사목사 사역이 시작된 것입니다. 지난주 운영위원회에서 담임목사님께서 사역 인수인계에 대한 구체적인 계획을 말씀하셨고, 이런 계획을 들으며 이제부터 시작이구나 실감하게 되었습니다. 한 교회의 영적 리더로서 공동체를 이끄는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니며, 특히 가정교회 시스템을 운영하는 것은 일반적인 전통 교회보다 더 큰 책임과 부담이 따름을 깨닫고 있습니다.
지난 화요일에 최병희 담임목사님을 만나 담임목사 사역 인계에 관한 여러 이야기를 나눴고 조언도 해 주시고, 기도해 주셨습니다. 참 감사했습니다. 신뢰받고 존경받은 목회자가 될 수 있도록 희생, 헌신, 겸손과 기도로 사역을 감당해 갈 수 있기를 다짐하고 기도하였습니다.
모세의 뒤를 이어 이스라엘 공동체를 이끌어야 했던 여호수아처럼, 저 역시 몬트리올 온누리 침례교회를 이끌어가야 하는 상황 앞에서 하나님께서는 저에게 말씀하셨습니다.
"두려워하지 말라, 낙담하지 말라. 굳세고 용감하라. 내가 너와 함께 할 것이다." (여호수아 1:9)

The Journey and Preparation of a Co-Pastor
On October 15, 2023, I became to serve as a co-pastor through a senior pastor election vote. At that time, the senior pastor planned to retire at the end of June 2026, so I expected my co-pastor period to last two and a half years. However, he recently decided to adjust his retirement date to December 2025, meaning my time as a co-pastor is passing more quickly than expected.
Some of our new brothers and sisters have asked about the role of a co-pastor. A few have asked me, "What exactly is a co-pastor?" While an associate pastor primarily assists the senior pastor, a co-pastor takes responsibility for their own ministry areas while also learning and preparing for a leadership transition.
As a co-pastor, I continued leading the youth ministry and worship ministry, which I had been overseeing since the summer of 2022, while also preaching for the adult congregation once every three months and leading early morning prayer meetings in the first half of 2024. In September 2024, I transitioned from youth and worship ministries to focus solely on adult ministry. Additionally, with the support of the senior pastor and the church leadership team, I was given four months to concentrate on preparing for my French language exam for permanent residency, while only handling my MokJang responsibilities. As a result, I achieved a B2 level in listening but received a B1 in speaking, meaning I need to retake the speaking test.
Starting in 2025, my co-pastor role will take full effect. Last week, during a church leadership meeting, the senior pastor shared a detailed plan for the ministry transition. Listening to his words, I felt a deep sense of realization that this journey is truly beginning. Leading a church as a spiritual shepherd is not an easy task, and in particular, the house church model brings even greater responsibility compared to a traditional church structure.
Last Tuesday, I met with Senior Pastor Choi to discuss various aspects of the transition into senior pastoral ministry. He offered valuable advice, prayed for me, and I felt deeply grateful. This meeting reaffirmed my commitment to serving with sacrifice, dedication, humility, and prayer so that I may become a trusted and respected pastor.
Just as Joshua was called to lead the Israelites after Moses, I, too, feel the weight and responsibility of leading Onnoori Baptist Church of Montreal. However, God speaks to me through His word:
"Do not be afraid or discouraged. Be strong and courageous. I will be with you." (Joshua 1:9)
