지난 목회자 컨퍼런스 때 닉슨 대통령 도서관을 방문했습니다. 도서관이라기 보다는 대통령 기념관이라고 할 수 있습니다. 거기에서 기억에 남는 것은, 미국 사람들이 잘 참는다는 것이었습니다. 닉슨 대통령의 재임중에 일어난 가장 큰 사건은 베트남 전쟁입니다. 많은 국민들이 막대한 인명 피해와 물질 피해로 인해 베트남 전쟁을 반대했지만, 대부분 ‘침묵하는 다수’였습니다. 과격하게 대항하지 않고 지도자를 믿어주는 것입니다.
제가 1984년 미국에 처음 왔을 때 놀란 것중 하나가 물건을 잘 반환해준다는 것이었습니다. 소비자를 ‘신뢰’하는 것이지요. 어떤 한국 사람은 이것을 악용해서 화장품을 반 이상 쓰고 나서 바꾸는 것을 보았습니다. 요새는 물건을 잘 안 반환해 준다고 합니다. 그래서 진짜 물건을 반환해야 하는 사람들이 피해를 봅니다. ‘신뢰상실’의 대가입니다.
이런 ‘신뢰 상실’의 현상은 다른 분야에서도 일어납니다. 한국에서는 직원을 해고하는 것이 거의 불가능에 가깝습니다. 사장이 마음대로 사원을 해고하는 것을 막기 위해서죠. 그러나 일을 열심히 일할 필요가 없기에, ‘도덕적 해이’가 심해졌습니다. 노동 시장이 경직되어서 기업이 원하는 직원을 뽑을 수 없게 됩니다. 일을 잘해도 좋은 직장으로 옮길 가능성이 없기에 국가적으로 활력이 없어집니다. ‘신뢰상실’의 대가입니다.
대학 입시에서도 비교과 활동을 반영하지 않는다고 합니다. 평가 과정에 대한 불신때문입니다. 그래서 객관적인 평가가 가능한 내신과 수능의 비중이 높아진다고 합니다. 그러나 이런 ‘신뢰상실’로 인한 대가도 만만치 않습니다. 공부가 아닌 다른 인격도 중요한데 이런 것들이 무시됩니다. 그 결과 의대열풍에서 볼 수 있듯이 돈과 성공을 우선하는 사회가 됩니다.
미국 사립대학에 들어가려면 공부도 중요하지만, 과외활동과 봉사활동도 중요합니다. 음악이나 미술이나 체육중 적어도 한 가지, 학교에서 하는 동아리 활동, 수상기록, 봉사활동, 아르바이트등… 공부만 하는 학생이 아니라 인격적으로 골고루 성숙한 학생, 자신만 위하는 학생이 아니라 사회에 봉사하는 학생을 뽑아서 잘 교육시키고 싶은 것입니다. 비록 평가가 완벽하지 않더라도, 그것이 더 중요하기 때문에 그렇게 하는 것입니다.
우리 크리스찬도 정직했으면 좋겠습니다. 물건을 잘 물려준다고 정당한 이유가 없는데 물리지 않았으면 좋겠습니다. 해고되지 않아도 열심히 일했으면 좋겠습니다. 입학원서도 정직하게 냈으면 좋겠습니다. 나부터 그렇게 할 때 가까이 있는 사람들이 그렇게 합니다. 그것이 확장되면 사회를 바꿀 수 있다고 믿습니다.
The price of loss of trust
During this pastors' conference, I visited the Nixon Presidential Library. It is more like a presidential memorial than a library. What I remember from there was that the American people are very patient. The biggest incident that happened during President Nixon's presidency was the Vietnam War. Many people opposed the Vietnam War because of the enormous loss of life and material damage, but most of them were a ' silent majority '. They did not oppose violently and trusted their leader.
When I first came to the US in 1984, one of the things that surprised me was how easy it was to return items. They trusted consumers. I saw a Korean take advantage of this and exchange cosmetics after using more than half of them. I heard that returning things are not that easy any more. So the people who have to return with a genuine cause are dameged. It's the price of 'loss of trust'.
This phenomenon of 'loss of trust' has also occurred in other fields. In Korea, it is almost impossible to fire employees. This is to prevent the boss from firing employees at will. However, since there is no need to work hard, 'moral hazard' has become severe. The labor market has become rigid, so companies cannot hire the employees they want. Even if you do a good job, there is no possibility of moving to a better job, so the country loses vitality. This is the price of 'loss of trust'.
It is said that extracurricular activities are not reflected in college entrance exams. This is because of distrust in the evaluation process. Therefore, the weight of class grades and the college entrance exam, which can be objectively evaluated, is said to be increased. However, the price of this 'loss of trust' is not small. Personalities other than studying is also important, but these are ignored. As a result, as can be seen in the medical school craze, a society that prioritizes money and success becomes a reality.
To enter a private American university, studying is important, but so are extracurricular activities and volunteer work. At least one of music, art, or physical education, club activities at school, awards, volunteer work, part-time jobs, etc … We want to select and educate students who are mature in character, not just students who study, and students who serve society, not students who only care about themselves. Even if the evaluation is not perfect, we do it because it is more important.
I hope that we Christians are honest too. I hope that we don't have to rerutn things without a good reason. I hope that we work hard even without a fear of getting fired. I hope that we can be honest when we apply for college. If we do that first, people around us will do the same. I believe that if that expands, we can change society.
