2021년 7월 8일, 저희 가족은 몬트리올에 도착했습니다. 기억하시겠지만 당시 코로나 팬데믹으로 인해 백신 접종과 코로나 검사 음성 확인 없이는 비행기를 탈 수 없던 때였습니다. 캐나다에 도착해서도 3일간 호텔에서 격리하고, 집에 도착해서도 일주일간 자가 격리를 해야 했습니다. 그 후에도 코로나 검사 결과가 음성으로 나와야만 외출할 수 있었습니다.
코로나 팬데믹으로 전 세계가 어려움에 처한 시기였기에, 그때 몬트리올에 온다는 것은 하나님의 계획과 섭리로밖에는 설명할 수 없는 놀라움이었습니다. 그리고 몬트리올에 도착했던 순간은 저에게 특별한 의미가 있었습니다. 1997년 2월, 약 7개월간 몬트리올에 머물며 다녔던 몬트리올 온누리 침례교회에 23년 만에 온 가족이 함께 다시 오게 되었기 때문입니다.
2021년 8월 3일, 별관에서 유스 첫 모임을 시작으로 몬트리올 온누리 침례교회에서의 사역이 본격적으로 시작되었습니다. 3년간 유스 사역과 외국인 유학생 사역을 하며 감사와 기쁨, 때로는 힘든 순간도 있었지만, 주님의 은혜로 동사목사 청빙을 받게 되었습니다. 지난해 9월부터 캄보디아 목장의 목자로, 새벽기도회와 주일예배 설교, 최근에 담임목사님이 오타와로 이사를 하시면서 수요예배 설교까지 사역을 확장해 가고 있습니다.
새로운 사역들을 해 오면서 저희 가족은 4년 만에 한국에 방문을 합니다. 작년 말부터 담임목사님과 상의하여 결정한 이번 방문은 여러 목적을 가지고 있습니다. 지난해 장모님께서 대장암 3기 수술과 항암 치료를 받으셨지만 함께하지 못했던 아쉬움과, 올해와 내년 부모님들의 팔순을 위한 가족 방문입니다. 또한 지난 목회자 컨퍼런스에서 들었던 청주 사랑의교회 안국철 목사님 교회 탐방과 저희 부부의 건강검진도 포함되어 있습니다.
저희 가족은 6월 24일 출국하여, 아내와 두 자녀는 8월 5일에, 저는 7월 8일에 돌아올 예정입니다. 첫째는 6월 5일 한국에 들어간 후 저와 함께 돌아올 예정이었으나, 예상치 못하게 무릎을 다쳐 한국에서 수술을 받고 현재 회복 중입니다. 그래서 언제 들어올지는 정해지지 않았습니다.
작년 12월 미리 예매한 항공권 덕분에 절반 가격으로 가족 다섯 명의 왕복 항공권을 마련할 수 있었던 것도 하나님의 은혜입니다. 이번 한국 방문이 은혜롭게 잘 마무리되고, 무사히 돌아올 수 있도록 기도 부탁드립니다.
On July 8, 2021, our family arrived in Montreal. As you may remember, this was during the COVID-19 pandemic when you couldn't board a plane without proof of vaccination and a negative COVID test. Even after arriving in Canada, we had to quarantine in a hotel for three days, and once we got home, we had to self-isolate for another week. Even after that, we could only go out after receiving a negative COVID test result.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic had put the entire world in difficulty, coming to Montreal at that time was nothing short of miraculous and could only be explained by God's plan and providence. The moment we arrived in Montreal held special meaning for me. It was because our entire family had come together to Onnoori Baptist Church of Montreal again after 23 years—the same church I had attended for about seven months starting in February 1997.
On August 3, 2021, our ministry at Onnoori Baptist Church of Montreal began in earnest with the first youth meeting in the annex building. Over three years of youth ministry and international student ministry, there were moments of gratitude and joy, and sometimes difficult times, but by the Lord's grace, I was called as a co- pastor. Since September last year, I have been serving as a shepherd for the Cambodia house church, preaching at dawn prayer meetings and Sunday services, and recently, as the senior pastor moved to Ottawa, I've expanded my ministry to include Wednesday service sermons.
While carrying out these new ministries, our family is visiting Korea for the first time in four years. This visit, decided in consultation with the senior pastor since late last year, serves multiple purposes. There's the regret of not being able to be there when my mother-in-law underwent stage 3 colon cancer surgery and chemotherapy last year, and this is a family visit for my parents' 80th birthdays this year and next year. It also includes a visit to Sarang Community Church in Cheongju, led by Pastor Ahn Guk-cheol, which I took his class at a recent pastors' conference, as well as health checkups for my wife and me.
Our family departed on June 24th, with my wife and two children scheduled to return on August 5th, and I'm planned to return on July 8th. Our eldest child entered Korea on June 5th and was supposed to return with me but unexpectedly injured their knee and is currently recovering after surgery in Korea. So when they'll be able to return is still undetermined.
Thanks to airline tickets we booked in advance last December, we were able to secure round-trip tickets for all five family members at half price—this too was God's grace. Please pray that this visit to Korea will conclude gracefully and that we can all return safely.
