오타와로 이사 와서 차 보험을 바꾸면서 고생을 좀 했습니다. 보험료 견적을 부탁하니까 퀘벡에서 내던 것보다 훨씬 비쌌습니다. 깜짝 놀라서 이유를 물으니까 제가 온타리오에서 운전한 경험이 없기 때문이라고 합니다.

보험 할인 혜택을 받으려면 과거 운전 경험을 내라고 했습니다. 그것도 20년치를. 같은 나라인데 다른 주의 정보를 알 수 없다는 것이 이해가 되지 않았습니다. 그래서 퀘벡에도 연락하고 그전에 살던 BC주에도 연락을 해서 기록을 받았습니다.

BC주 기록을 받고 그동안 잊고 있었던 사고가 기억났습니다. 그런데 내용이 놀라웠습니다. 내용은 상해 (Bodily injury)인데 보험금 지급 금액이 $43,000이 넘었습니다.

2013년에 저는 새벽에 3 시간 기도하기 위해 교회에 5시에 갔습니다. 아내는 새벽 6시에 따로 왔는데, 아내가 교회에 오면서 자전거와 부딪혔습니다. 자전거 운전자는 큰 길에서 작은 길로 좌회전하는 아내 차를 보지 못하고 앞으로 나오다가 차에 부딪힌 것 같습니다. 자전거 운전자가 자전거에서 떨어지긴 했지만, 자전거가 말짱했기에 크게 신경쓰지 않았습니다.

나중에 보험회사에서 재판을 하고 있다는 연락을 받았습니다. 혹시 재판에 나와서 증언을 할 수 있냐고 했는데, 결국 연락이 오지 않았습니다. 그리고 잊어버리고 있었는데, 자전거를 타고 가다가 (자기 잘못으로) 살짝 차에 부딪혀서 넘어진 댓가로 무려 $43,000 이상을 받은 것입니다.

저도 비슷한 사고를 낸 적이 있습니다. 2005년 미국에서 신학교 다닐 때였는데, 운전을 하고 가는데 초등학교 고학년으로 보이는 소년이 자전거를 타고 저를 향해 오고 있었습니다. 저는 깜짝 놀라서 차를 세웠고, 그 소년은 브레이크를 밟지 못하고 제 차에 부딪혔습니다. 자전거는 앞 바퀴가 휠 정도로 망가졌습니다.

부모에게 연락을 하니까, 아들이 다치지는 않은 것 같으니까 나중에 상황을 보고 다시 연락을 하겠다고 했습니다. 나중에 그 소년 아버지가 전화를 했는데, 자기 아들이 잘못한 것이니까 차가 문제가 있으면 배상하겠다고 했습니다. 대화하면서 소년의 아버지가 독실한 크리스찬이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 다행히 제 차는 괜찮았고, 오히려 저는 그 소년에게 제 자전거를 주었습니다. 아버지가 사양했지만 저도 잘 안 타는 자전거라고 하니까 감사히 받았습니다.

첫번째 아저씨는 짜증을 나게 했습니다. 두번째 아버지를 기억하면서 미소를 지었습니다. 앞으로도 사람들에게 미소를 줄 수 있는 사람으로 살기를 소원해 봅니다.

I had a bit of a hard time changing my car insurance when I moved to Ottawa. When I asked for a quote, it was much more expensive than what I was paying in Quebec. I was shocked and asked why, and they said it was because I had no driving experience in Ontario.

In order to get the insurance discount, they asked me to submit my previous driving experience. And that was 20 years of driving experience. I didn't understand how they couldn't get information from other provinces in the same country. So I contacted Quebec and BC, where I lived before, to get my records.

I received the BC records and remembered an accident that I had forgotten about. But the content was surprising. The content was a bodily injury and the insurance payment amount was over $43,000.

In 2013, I went to church at 5am to pray for 3 hours in the morning. My wife came to church separately at 6am, and she hit a bicycle on her way to church. I think the bicyclist didn't see her car turning left from the main road to the small road and got hit by the car as he was coming out in front. The bicyclist fell off the bike, but the bike was fine, so I didn't really care.

Later, my wife got a call from the insurance company saying that they were going to trial. They said she could come to the trial and testify, but she never got a call. And we forgot about it. He got hit by a car while riding a bike (at his own fault) and fell down, and ended up getting paid over $43,000.

I had a similar inccident. In 2005, when I was attending seminary, I was driving when a boy who looked like in upper grades of elementary school came toward me on a bicycle. I was so surprised that I stopped the car, but the boy failed to brake and hit into my car. The bike was damaged and the front wheel was bent.

When I called the parents, they said that their son did not seem to be hurt and that they would contact me later after checking the situation. Later, the boy's father called and said that it was his son's fault and that he would pay for the damage if there was a problem with the car. As we talked, I found out that the boy's father was a devout Christian. Fortunately, my car was fine, and instead, I gave the boy my bike. The father refused, but accepted it gratefully because I said that I didn't ride it often.

The first male was annoying. I smiled as I remembered the father. I hope to continue living as a person who can make people smile.
