저는 1974년에 고등학교 평준화 1기로 추첨을 통해서 배문고등학교에 들어갔습니다. 당시 배문고등학교는 3류 학교로서, 서울대에 2 년에 한 명 들어갔는데, 그것도 야간 고등학교 출신이었습니다. 야간은 낮에 일해야 하는, 경제적으로 어려운 학생이 다니기 때문에 성적이 괜찮은(?) 학생들이 있었습니다.

입학하니까 배문고등학교는 평준화된 학생들을 받은 기회를 살려서 좋은 입학 성적을 내려고 애를 썼습니다. 당시에는 인쇄물을 나눠줄 때 필경사가 등사지에 쓰면 그것을 롤러로 일일히 등사해서 나눠 주었습니다. 그래서 인쇄물을 나눠주는데 한계가 있었습니다. 그런데 학생들에게 더 많은 인쇄물을 나눠 주기 위해서 복사기를 외국에서 직접 수입할 정도였습니다. 선생님들이 타이프를 치면 바로 복사해서 나눠줄 수 있는 것이죠.

수업도 원래 8 시간인데 아침에 한 시간 더 하고, 수업이 끝나고 9시 반까지 4 시간 더 해서 총 13 시간을 수업했습니다. (다행히 교육청에 걸려서 곧 취소되었습니다^^).

저와 같은 학년이었던 박정희 대통령의 아들인 박지만군이 배문중학교에 다녔는데, 그때 서울대 사범대를 막졸업한 실력있는 선생님들이 배문중학교에 왔다고 합니다. 박지만군이 배문 중학교를 졸업한 후, 그 선생님들이 배문고등학교로 올라와서 저희들을 가르치셨습니다.

이렇게 학교에서 열심히 가르쳐서 학생들이 실력이 좋았지만, 대학교 입학성적은 그리 좋지 않았습니다. 당시 배문고등학교는 일류 대학교에 대한 진학지도를 한 경험이 없었기 때문입니다.

결국 그해에 서울대에 13 명이 입학했습니다. 그런데 연세대나 고려대에 지원한 학생들이 거의 합격했습니다. (당시 연세대나 고려대의 경쟁률이 3-4:1이니까 많이 하향지원한 셈입니다). 이런 경험을 바탕으로 제 아래 학년부터는 서울대에 30 명이 넘게 입학했습니다.

열심히 노력해도 경험이 없으면 결과를 내기 어렵습니다. 우리 교회도 열심히 전도한다고 하지만 전도해서 예수님을 믿게 한 경험이 없으면 많은 열매를 맺기 어렵습니다. 그래서 전도의 경험을 쌓는 것이 중요합니다.

요새 우리 교회에서 전도의 열매가 맺히려고 합니다. 전도하여 예수님을 믿게 한 경험을 하고 나면, 지금보다 훨씬 많은 전도의 열매를 맺을 수 있을 것입니다. 그래서 지금이 고비입니다. 한두 명이라도 전도의 열매를 맺도록 실망하지 말고 조금 더 힘을 내었으면 좋겠습니다.

I entered Baemun High School through a lottery in 1974 as the first class of equalization. At the time, it was a third-rate school, and only one student entered Seoul National University every two years, and that student was a night school graduate. Since night school was for students who had to work during the day and were financially disadvantaged, there were still some decent(?) students.

Baemun High School tried to get good college entrance results by taking advantage of the opportunity to receive equal students. At that time, when handing out printed materials, the scribe wrote on mimeograph paper and copied it one by one with a roller and distributed it. So there was a limit to how much printed materials. However, in order to distribute more printed materials to students, it even imported a copy machine directly from overseas. Teachers could type and copy the materials and distribute them right away.

The class was originally 8 hours, but we had an extra hour in the morning and 4 hours until 9:30 after, for a total of 13 hours. (Fortunately, it was reported to the Office of Education and was canceled soon^^). Park Ji-man, the son of President Park Chung-hee, who was in the same grade as me, attended Baemun Middle School, and they got talented teachers from Seoul National University to Baemun Middle School. After Park Ji-man graduated, they came up to Baemun High School and taught us.

Although the students were good at school because they were taught so diligently, their college entrance exam results were not that good. At the time, Baemun High School had no experience in providing admission guidance to top universities.

In the end, only 13 students were admitted to Seoul National University that year. However, most of the students who applied to Yonsei or Korea University were accepted. (At that time, the competition rate was 3-4:1, so they applied too conservatively) Based on this experience, more than 30 students were admitted to Seoul National University in the year after me.

Even if you work hard, it is difficult to get results if you do not have experience. Our church outreach diligently, but if we do not have experience in making people believe in Jesus, it is difficult to bear much fruit. That is why it is important to gain experience in evangelizing.

These days, our church is trying to bear fruit from evangelism. After experiencing evangelism and making people believe in Jesus, we will be able to bear much more fruit from evangelism than we do now. That is why now is a critical moment. I hope that we will not be disappointed and will work a little harder so that at least one or two people can bear fruit from evangelism.
