24일간 한국을 방문하고 몬트리올 집에 돌아온 날, 가장 먼저 확인한 것은 차의 시동이었습니다. 최근 오타와로 이사하신 최 목사님께서 타시던 교회 차량, 2013년식 Subaru 승용차를 저에게 맡기고 가셨기 때문입니다.주행거리가 많고 오래된 차라 걱정을 했습니다. 그런데 다행히 시동이 잘 걸려 안심했습니다.
하지만 며칠 뒤 갑자기 시동이 걸리지 않는 일이 벌어졌습니다. 점프선을 빌려 시동을 걸고 충전도 해보았지만, 조금만 시간이 지나도 다시 멈추곤 했습니다. 배터리를 살펴보니 외관은 오래되어 있었고, 접지 부위에는 하얀 고체와 녹이 덕지덕지 붙어 있었습니다. 결국 새 배터리로 교체하였습니다.
이 일을 겪으며 문득 우리의 영적 상태도 이와 같다는 생각이 들었습니다. 하나님과의 교제가 끊긴 채 오래 지내다 보면, 어느 순간 영혼이 ‘방전’되어 있다는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다. 말씀과 기도 없이 버틴 시간만큼 우리의 신앙은 점점 무기력해지고 냉담해집니다.
그리고 이런 영적 방전은 한 번의 예배나 감정적인 충동으로는 쉽게 회복되지 않습니다. 저 역시 처음 시동이 안 걸렸을 때, 몇 분간 도움을 받아 시동을 걸고 잠시 운행했지만, 곧 다시 꺼져버렸습니다. 외부의 도움으로 잠깐 충전은 가능하지만, 근본적인 회복이 이루어지지 않으면 문제는 반복됩니다.
신앙도 그렇습니다. 문제를 겪고 난 뒤에야 급히 말씀을 붙잡거나 누군가의 기도로 회복을 시도할 수는 있습니다. 그러나 이런 일시적인 '점프'는 임시 방편일 뿐, 우리의 영혼이 하나님과 깊이 연결되어 지속적으로 공급받지 않으면 곧 다시 힘을 잃게 됩니다.
이번 뉴젠 컨퍼런스를 통해 큰 은혜를 경험한 청소년·청년들도, 그 감동이 오래 지속되기를 원한다면 하나님과의 지속적인 교제가 꼭 필요합니다. 열정적인 찬양과 눈물의 기도도 우리의 신앙을 잠시 ‘점프’시킬 수는 있지만, 일상을 살아가는 힘은 매일의 말씀 묵상과 기도 속에서만 공급됩니다.
혹시 요즘 여러분의 시동은 잘 걸리고 있나요? 감정이 아니라, 말씀과 기도로 내 삶의 엔진에 다시 불이 붙고 있나요? 오늘 다시 시동을 거십시오. 하나님은 언제나 기다리고 계십니다. 우리 안에 새 힘을 주시고, 다시 달릴 수 있도록 말입니다.
After returning home to Montreal from a 24-day trip to Korea, the first thing I checked was whether the car would start. Pastor Choi, who recently moved to Ottawa, had entrusted me with the church vehicle he had been using a 2013 Subaru sedan. Since it had high mileage and old, I was a bit concerned. But thankfully, the engine started well, and I was relieved.
But just a few days later, the car suddenly wouldn’t start. I borrowed jumper cables and tried recharging the battery, but even after a short while, the car would die again. When I examined the battery, I found that it was quite old, and the grounding area was covered in corrosion and white residue. In the end, I had no choice but to replace it with a new battery.
This experience made me reflect on our spiritual condition. When we go long periods without fellowship with God, we eventually find that our souls have become drained. The longer we try to go on without prayer and the Word, the more powerless and indifferent our faith becomes.
And just like the car, spiritual drain isn’t fixed by a single worship service or an emotional experience. When my car first wouldn’t start, I was able to jump-start it and drive for a short while, but the problem came back quickly. Temporary help may give us a brief boost, but without fundamental restoration, the problem keeps repeating.
Faith is the same. We may try to quickly turn to Scripture or prayer only after facing trouble. But those short bursts are just temporary "jumps." Unless our soul is deeply and consistently connected to God, we’ll soon find ourselves running out of strength again.
This is especially important for our youth and young adults who recently experienced a powerful encounter with God at the NewGen Conference. If you want that blessing to last, you must continue in daily fellowship with Him. Passionate worship and tearful prayers may give your faith a spark, but the strength to live each day comes only through steady prayer and meditation on God's Word.
