우리 교회에는 금요기도회가 없습니다. 그 이유는 금요일 저녁마다 각 목장에서 모임을 갖기 때문입니다. 그래서 우리는 금요기도회 대신 수요일에 함께 모여 기도회를 드립니다. 단순한 예배 형식이 아니라 기도에 집중하는 시간이기에 ‘수요예배’라 하지 않고 ‘수요기도회’라 부르고 있습니다.

지난 8월, 휴스턴 서울교회에 연수 중 두 번의 수요기도회에 참석할 기회가 있었습니다. 그곳에서는 수요기도회 때마다 목장 발표 시간이 있었습니다. 목장 발표는 목장의 생생한 삶을 나누고 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 은혜로운 시간이었습니다.

목장 발표의 순서는 이렇습니다. 먼저, 목장에서 후원하는 선교사님 가정을 PPT 한 장으로 간단히 소개하고, 이어서 특송이 있었습니다, 그리고 목자가 목원 한 명을 짧게(10초 이내) 소개하면, 소개받은 목원이 또 다른 목원을 소개하는 방식으로 모든 목원이 차례로 소개되었습니다. 마지막으로 목원 중 한 명이 간증을 나누었는데, 주제는 주로 “어떻게 목장에 연결되었는지, 목장을 통해 받은 은혜가 무엇인지”였습니다.

특별히 목장 발표 때는 후원하는 선교사님의 기도제목을 가지고  함께 기도합니다. 이를 통해 목장과 선교가 연결되고, 교회 전체가 한 마음으로 선교를 위해 중보 하게 됩니다. 또한 각 목장은 일 년에 한 번 발표를 통해 성도님들에게 목장을 소개하고 간증하는 귀한 시간을 갖게 됩니다.

휴스턴 서울교회처럼 목장이 많은 교회에서는 매주 목장 발표를 해도 한 목장이 2년에 한 번 정도 발표 기회가 돌아옵니다. 우리 교회도 이 모델을 따라, 격달에 한 번, 마지막 주 수요기도회 때 ‘목장 발표’를 하려고 합니다. 그러면 1년에 각 목장이 한 번씩 발표를 하게 될 것입니다.

또 한 가지 계획은, 격 달에 한 번은 ‘수요 찬양집회’로 드리는 것입니다. 지금까지의 수요기도회는 보통 찬양 10~15분, 말씀 15~20분, 그리고 합심 기도회 30분으로 진행되었습니다. 그러나 앞으로는 두 달에 한 번, 찬양을 더 길고 풍성하게 부르며 기도에 더 집중하는 수요찬양집회를 가지려 합니다.

찬양은 우리의 마음을 하나님께 열어 주고, 기도는 성령의 역사를 경험하게 합니다. 이 두 가지가 함께 어우러질 때 성도들의 영혼은 새 힘을 얻게 되고, 교회는 영적 부흥을 경험하게 될 것입니다.

Our church does not have a Friday prayer meeting. The reason is that every Friday evening, each house church (mokjang) gathers for its meeting. Instead of a Friday prayer meeting, we come together on Wednesday evenings for a prayer meeting. Since this time is focused not simply on worship but on prayer itself, we call it the “Wednesday Prayer Meeting” rather than the “Wednesday Service.”

During my pastoral training at Seoul Baptist Church of Houston this past August, I had the opportunity to attend two of their Wednesday Prayer Meetings. What was especially impressive was the “house church presentation.” The presentation was a precious time of sharing the living testimony of the house churches and giving glory to God.

The order of the house church presentation was as follows: First, the house church briefly introduced the missionary family they support using a single PowerPoint slide. Then there was a special song. After that, the house church shepherd  introduced one member briefly (within 10 seconds), and the member who was introduced would then introduce another member, continuing until all members had been introduced. Finally, one member shared a testimony, usually about how they were connected to the house church, how they met the leader, and the grace they had received through the fellowship.

In particular, during the house church presentation, the church prayed together for the prayer requests of the supported missionary. Through this, the house churches and missions were connected, and the entire congregation united in interceding for world missions. Each house church also had the opportunity once a year to introduce themselves to the congregation and share testimonies of God’s grace.

At Houston Seoul Baptist Church, where there are many house churches, even if presentations were held every week, each house church would only have a chance once every two years. Following this model, our church plans to hold a house church presentation every other month, on the last Wednesday of the month. This way, each house church will have the opportunity to present once a year.

Another plan is to hold a “Wednesday Praise and Prayer Night” every other month. Until now, our Wednesday Prayer Meetings have generally consisted of 10–15 minutes of praise, 15–20 minutes of message, and 30 minutes of corporate prayer. However, moving forward, every two months we plan to have a service with extended praise and prayer, focusing more deeply on worship and intercession.

Praise opens our hearts to God, and prayer allows us to experience the work of the Holy Spirit. When these two come together, the souls of God’s people are renewed with strength, and the church will experience spiritual revival.
