(최영기 목사님의 칼럼 「목사님 교회, 성경적입니까?」를 읽고)

목사님, 교회 성경적입니까? 이 질문은 모든 교회가 늘 스스로에게 던져야 할 질문입니다. 가정교회를 시작하신 휴스턴서울교회의 최영기 목사님은 이에 대한 명확한 기준을 제시하십니다. “교회가 성경적인지 아닌지는 열매로 알 수 있다.” 신약성경의 교회들이 맺었던 열매가 오늘 우리 교회 안에도 맺히고 있다면, 그 교회는 성경적인 교회라는 것입니다.  그렇다면 신약 교회는 어떤 열매를 맺었을까요?

첫째, 비신자들이 예수님을 믿었습니다.
둘째, 성도들의 삶이 변화되었습니다.
셋째, 교회 생활에 기쁨이 넘쳤습니다.

사도행전을 보면 교회마다 어려움이 있었지만, 그럼에도 “기쁨이 충만하더라”는 말씀이 반복됩니다. 전도는 되지만 성도의 삶이 변하지 않는 교회, 또는 삶의 변화는 있으나 전도가 일어나지 않는 교회, 혹은 영혼 구원과 변화는 있지만 기쁨이 없는 교회, 이 모두는 아직 완전한 성경적 교회라 할 수 없습니다.

최영기 목사님은 1993년 휴스턴서울교회 담임으로 부임한 후 9개월 만에 교회를 가정교회로 전환했습니다. 그때부터 신약 교회가 보여 준 열매들이 나타나기 시작했다고 합니다. 목장을 통해 비신자 전도가 일어났고, 목자로 섬기던 성도들의 삶이 변화되었습니다. 그리고 교회 안에는 간증과 기쁨이 넘쳤습니다. 사람들이 교회를 떠나지 못할 정도로, 교회는 사랑과 헌신의 공동체로 변해 갔습니다.

예수님께서는 “좋은 나무가 나쁜 열매를 맺을 수 없고, 나쁜 나무가 좋은 열매를 맺을 수 없다.”고 하셨습니다(마 7:18). 결국 교회의 진정한 모습은 열매로 증명됩니다. 우리 교회는 지금 어떤 열매를 맺고 있습니까?
비신자들이 예수님을 만나고 있습니까? 성도들의 삶이 주님을 닮아가고 있습니까? 우리의 공동체 안에 기쁨과 감사가 넘치고 있습니까?

이 세 가지 열매 영혼 구원, 삶의 변화, 기쁨 가운데 어느 하나라도 놓치지 않고 자라갈 때, 그 교회가 바로 성경적인 교회입니다.

이번 주에는 우리 교회의 모습을, 그리고 내 목장의 모습을 이 세 가지 기준으로 조용히 점검해 보길 바랍니다. 하나님이 기뻐하시는 성경적인 교회, 그 열매를 우리 안에서 더욱 풍성히 맺어가길 소망합니다.

(Reflections on Pastor Choi, Young-Gi’s article, “Is Your Church Biblical?”).

“Pastor, is your church biblical?” This is a question every church should continually ask itself. Pastor Choi Young-Gi of Houston Seoul Baptist Church, who began the house church movement, gives a clear answer: “You can tell whether a church is biblical by its fruit.” So what kind of fruit did the New Testament churches bear?

First, unbelievers came to believe in Jesus.
Second, believers’ lives were transformed.
Third, joy overflowed in their fellowship.

The book of Acts shows that even though the churches faced persecution and hardship, it repeatedly says, “they were filled with joy.” A church where evangelism happens but believers’ lives are not transformed, or where lives are changed but no one is being saved, or where there is both evangelism and transformation but no joy—none of these can yet be called a fully biblical church.

When Pastor Choi became the senior pastor of Houston Seoul Baptist Church in 1993, he transitioned the church into a house church system within nine months. From that point on, the fruit of a New Testament church began to appear. Through the Mokjang (house church), unbelievers were led to Christ, and believers who served as shepherds began to experience real transformation. Testimonies and joy began to fill the church. The congregation became a community of love and devotion so strong that people could not easily leave.

Jesus said, “A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.” (Matthew 7:18) Ultimately, the true nature of a church is proven by its fruit.

So what kind of fruit are we bearing as a church today? Are unbelievers meeting Jesus among us? Are believers’ lives being shaped to resemble Christ?

Is there joy and gratitude overflowing in our community? When these three fruits—the salvation of souls, transformed lives, and overflowing joy—grow together without lacking any, that is when a church can truly be called biblical.

This week, let us take time to quietly reflect on our church and our mokjang in light of these three marks. May we become a church that brings delight to God, bearing the abundant fruit of a truly biblical church.
