하나님은 6일 동안 일하고 7일에는 쉬라고 하시면서 안식일을 주셨습니다. 안식일에는 6일 동안 쌓인 피곤을 푸는 ‘쉼’과 다음 6일을 준비하는 ‘재충전’의 의미가 있다고 할 수 있습니다.

마찬가지로 목사도 안식년을 가지면서, 지난 사역의 피곤함을 풀고, 앞으로 사역을 위한 재충전의 시간을 갖습니다. 교회의 사정상 1 년 동안 안식년을 갖는 경우는 거의 없고 1-3 개월 정도 ‘안식월’을 갖습니다.

제가 지난 두 달 동안 안식월을 가진 데에는 두가지 이유가 있습니다. 첫째로, 저희 부부가 몬트리올을 떠나 있는 동안에 장목사님이 혼자서 교회의 모든 사역을 담당할 기회를 주기 위함입니다. 두 달 동안 사역한 장목사님의 경험과 성도님들의 반응을 통해 제가 언제 담임목사직을 이양할지 결정하려고 합니다.

둘째는 저희 부부의 쉼을 위함입니다. 2017년 빅토리아 교회를 사임하고 최소한 6개월을 쉬려고 했습니다 (2005년부터 12년 동안 쉬지 않았습니다). 그런데 하나님의 인도하심을 따라서 몬트리올로 오는 바람에 한 달 정도만 쉴 수 있었습니다. 몬트리올에 와서도 코비드 19등의 이유로 인해 사역은 많지만 쉬지 못하고 있었습니다. 올해 초부터 평소에 하는 사역을 감당하는 것이 힘들어졌습니다. 이때 쉼이 필요하다는 것을 깨닫고 안식월을 가지려고 한 것입니다.

안식월을 가지면서 앞으로 사역에 대한 재충전도 할 수 있었습니다. 제가 담임목사직에서 은퇴하더라도 당분간은 영어권과 교육 파트 (주일학교와 청소년부)를 담당하려고 합니다. 한국에 있는 동안에 가정교회를 여러 교회 방문했습니다. 그러면서 교육 파트에 대한 교육도 받고 아이디어도 챙길 수 있었습니다. 아울러 주일예배 등 교회 전반에 대한 인도하심도 받았습니다.

올 연말까지는 장목사님과의 사역분담에 대해 인도하심을 받으려고 합니다. 그리고 제가 담임목사로서 다시 교회 전반에 대한 리더십을 회복하려고 합니다. 지난 두 달 동안 장목사님이 주관한 사역들은 장목사님의 주도로 정리하게 될 것입니다.

안식월 동안 전체적으로 좋은 쉼을 가졌습니다. 앞으로 얼마 동안 새 힘을 얻어 사역할지 모르지만, 최선을 다하려고 합니다. 저희가 없는 동안에 수고하신 성도님들과 기도해주신 분들께 감사드립니다.

God gave us the Sabbath, commanding us to work for six days and rest on the seventh. The Sabbath carries the meaning of “rest,” relieving the fatigue accumulated over six days, and “recharging,” preparing for the next six days.

Likewise, pastors also take a sabbatical year to relieve the exhaustion from past ministry and to recharge for future ministry. Due to the circumstances of most churches, it is rare to take a full year, so pastors usually take a one- to three-month sabbatical month.

There were two reasons I took a sabbatical month over the past two months. First, it was to give Pastor Jang an opportunity to oversee all the ministries of the church on his own while my wife and I were away from Montreal. Based on Pastor Jang’s experience during these two months of ministry and the congregation’s response, I plan to decide when to transfer the senior pastor role to him.

The second reason was for my wife and me to rest. When I resigned from Victoria Church in 2017, I intended to rest for at least six months (since I had not rested once from 2005 to 2017). However, because of God’s guidance leading us to Montreal, I could only rest for about a month. Even after arriving in Montreal, due to Covid-19 and other factors, the workload was heavy, but I wasn’t able to rest. Starting early this year, it became difficult even to carry out my usual ministry responsibilities. Realizing I needed rest, I decided to take a sabbatical month.

During this sabbatical, I was also able to recharge for future ministry. Even if I retire from the senior pastor role, I plan for the time being to oversee the English ministry and the education departments (Sunday School and Youth). While in Korea, I visited several house churches. Through these visits, I received education and gathered ideas for the education ministries. I also received guidance regarding Sunday worship and various aspects of overall church ministry.

Until the end of this year, I will continue to seek God’s guidance regarding how to divide ministry responsibilities with Pastor Jang. I intend to resume overall leadership of the church as the senior pastor. The ministries Pastor Jang has overseen during the past two months will be organized under his leadership.

Overall, it was certainly a good time of rest. I do not know how long I will continue ministry with renewed strength, but I intend to do my very best. I am grateful to the congregation and to those who prayed for us while we were away.
