하나님께 합격입니까?
 
지난 가을에 한국을 방문했을 때 의아(?)했던 것중 하나가 교통질서를 잘 지킨다는 것이었습니다. 여간해서는 제한 속도를 넘지 않고 빨간불 신호도 잘 지켰습니다. 그것도 과거에는 신호를 잘 안지키던 택시가 그랬습니다.
 
과거에는 택시를 타면 앞에 차가 없으면 시내에서도 100km로 달리곤 했고, 또 횡단보도에서 빨간불이라도 사람이 건너지 않으면 그냥 지나가곤 했습니다. 한국이 좋아졌다는 생각이 들었습니다.
 
아내가 한국에 살면서 여행을 못했다고 해서, 이번에 전국을 도는 여행을 했습니다. 동생이 차를 빌려줘서 운전하면서 다녔는데, 차 내비를 이용하면서 궁금증이 풀렸습니다. 
 
자동차 내비가 쉴새없이 말을 하는데, 주로 ‘제한속도 단속구간입니다’라는 안내였습니다. 거의 1-2 km 마다 카메라로 과속을 단속하는 것이었습니다. 이렇게 꼼꼼하게 과속과 신호위반을 단속하니까 교통법규를 안지킬 수 없겠단 생각이 들었습니다.
 
오히려 캐나다에서 과속을 많이 합니다. 제한속도보다 천천히 달리면 이상한 사람으로 취급받습니다. 제한속도보다 10km 정도 빨리 달리는 것이 정상입니다. 저도 그렇고 대부분의 캐나다 운전자들도 마찬가지입니다. 
 
한국과 캐나다의 운전자들을 보면서 인간의 죄를 생각해 봅니다. 한국에서는 과속을 단속하는 카메라가 곳곳에 있으니까 과속을 거의 하지 않습니다. 마찬가지로, 하나님이 법을 어길 때마다 벌을 내리시면 우리는 하나님의 법을 잘 지킬 것입니다.
 
반면, 캐나다에서는 과속을 단속하는 카메라가 없으니까 과속으로 걸릴 확율이 적습니다. 그래서 법을 쉽게 어깁니다. 하나님이 봐주시니까 법을 어기면서 사는 것과 같습니다.
 
우리의 삶은 캐나다와 비슷합니다. 우리가 잘못을 저질러도 하나님께서 바로 벌을 내리지 않으십니다. 하나님은 우리가 죄를 깨닫고 회개하기를 기다리십니다. 무엇보다 우리가 자발적으로 하나님의 법을 지키며 살기를 원하십니다. 
 
이런 하나님의 배려를 악용해서 죄를 짓는다면, 벌을 받지 않는다 하더라도 하나님께는 실격입니다. 이것이 벌을 받는 것보다 더 심각합니다. 그러나 하나님의 배려에 감사하면서 하나님의 법대로 산다면 하나님께 합격입니다.
 
2025년을 보내면서 올 한해 동안 하나님 보시기에 어떻게 살았는지 되돌아 보면 좋겠습니다.
 
 
Are You Approved by God?
 
When I visited Korea last fall, one thing that surprised me was how well people obeyed traffic laws. Drivers rarely exceeded the speed limit, and they stopped at red lights. Even taxis—which in the past often ignored signals—were following the rules.
 
In the past, if you took a taxi, the driver would race at 100 km/h even in the city when the road was clear, and they would often drive through red lights if no pedestrians were crossing. Seeing how things had changed made me think Korea had improved.
 
Because my wife had not been able to travel much while living in Korea, we took a trip around the country. My younger brother lent us his car, and as I drove using the navigation system, my curiosity was resolved.
 
The GPS kept talking nonstop: most often saying, “You are entering a speed enforcement zone.” Almost every 1–2 kilometers, there were cameras monitoring speed. With such frequent and detailed enforcement of speeding and signal violations, it made sense that drivers had no choice but to follow the rules.
 
In Canada, however, people speed much more. Driving slower than the speed limit is considered strange. It's normal to drive about 10 km/h faster than the speed limit. I am like that, and most Canadian drivers are the same.
 
Watching drivers in Korea and Canada made me think about human sinfulness. In Korea, because speed cameras are everywhere, people rarely speed. Likewise, if God punished us every time we broke His law, we would obey His law very well.
 
But in Canada, where there are few speed cameras, the likelihood of being caught is low. So people break the law easily. It is like living as if we break God’s laws because God overlooks our actions.
 
Our lives resemble the situation in Canada. Even when we do wrong, God does not immediately punish us. He waits for us to recognize our sins and repent. Above all, He wants us to obey His law voluntarily.
 
If we misuse God’s patience and commit sin—even if we do not receive punishment—we are disqualified before God. And that is far more serious than being punished. But if we live according to God’s law with gratitude for His patience, then we are approved by God.
 
As we come to the end of 2025, it is good for us to reflect on how we have lived this past year before God.
