성탄절과 관련해서 몇가지 생각해 볼 점이 있습니다. 먼저, 예수님이 12월 25일에 탄생했다는 것이 성경에 나오지 않습니다. 고대 로마의 이교도들이 동지절(12월 24일-1월 6일)을 절기로 지켰는데 기독교가 이교도들을 정복했다는 의미에서 12월 25일을 예수님의 생일로 채택했다는 설이 있습니다. 12월 25일은 로마 태양신의 생일이기도 합니다.
또 다른 문제는 성탄절의 상업화입니다. 요새 성탄절하면 선물하고 산타클로스 복장과 모자가 떠오릅니다. 선물을 나누는 것은 이교의 영향을 받아 고대 로마의 농신제에서 비롯되었다고 합니다. 또 산타복장의 주인공 산타도 성탄절과 전혀 관련이 없습니다.
중요한 것은 성탄절을 어떻게 지키는가 입니다. 많은 교회에서는 성탄절을 맞아서 성가대가 칸타타를 부릅니다. 쉽지 않은 10 곡 정도의 곡을 4 부로 나눠 부르기 위해서 몇 달전부터 연습합니다. 저도 미국에서 공부할 때 매년 성탄절 칸타타를 불렀습니다.
올해 우리 교회에서 많은 분들이 성탄주일 프로그램을 준비하는 것을 보면서 보기 좋았습니다. 성가대 칸타타는 성가대만 준비하는데, 우리 교회는 주일학교부터 교회 지도자들까지 많은 분들이 열심히 준비하기 때문입니다.
또 성탄주일 예배에 많은 VIP를 초대하기 위해서 애쓰는 모습이 보기 좋았습니다. 과거와는 달리, 각 목장에서 VIP 명단을 작성하여 기도하고, VIP를 만나서 관계를 맺고 성탄주일예배에 초대할 계획을 세우고, 그것을 위해서 수요예배 때 기도했습니다. 이런 모습이 예수님이 기뻐하시는 모습이라고 생각합니다.
예수님이 이 땅에 오신 이유는 십자가에 달려 돌아가시기 위함입니다. 십자가에 돌아가신 것은 죄인들을 구원하시기 위함입니다. 그래서 성탄절을 가장 의미있게 기념하는 것은 그날 VIP 분들을 예수님께로 모시는 것이라고 생각합니다.
하나님은 우리의 수고와 희생을 반드시 갚아 주십니다. 우리가 초청한 VIP 분들이 예수님을 영접하게 하실 것입니다. 세상적으로도 우리가 드린 수고와 희생 때문에 손해보지 않게 하십니다. 우리의 기도에 응답하실 것입니다. 구원받은 자로서 사는 기쁨을 채워주실 것입니다.
There are a few things to consider regarding Christmas. First, the Bible doesn't say that Jesus was born on December 25th. There's a theory that the pagans of ancient Rome celebrated the winter solstice (December 24th - January 6th) as a holiday, and that Christianity adopted December 25th as Jesus' birthday to symbolize the conquest of paganism. December 25th is also the birthday of the Roman sun god.
Another problem is the commercialization of Christmas. At Christmas, people think of gifts and Santa Claus costumes and hats. The practice of giving gifts is said to have originated from paganism, stemming from the Saturnalia of ancient Rome. Furthermore, Santa, the character in the Santa suit, has nothing to do with Christmas.
What's important is how we celebrate Christmas. In many churches, choirs sing cantatas for Christmas. They practice for months in advance to prepare a four-part choir consisting of around ten challenging songs. I, too, sang a Christmas cantata every year when I was studying in the US.
It was wonderful to see so many people at our church preparing for the Christmas program this year. While the choir cantata is prepared solely by the choir, our church has many people, from Sunday school to church leaders, diligently preparing.
It was also wonderful to see the efforts being made to invite many VIPs to the Christmas Sunday service. Unlike in the past, each MokJang created a VIP list, prayed for them, met with them, built relationships, planned an invitation to the Christmas Sunday service, and prayed for this during the Wednesday service. I believe this is what pleases Jesus.
Jesus came to this earth to die on the cross. He died on the cross to save sinners. Therefore, I believe the most meaningful way to celebrate Christmas is to bring VIPs to Jesus.
God will surely reward our efforts and sacrifices. He will ensure that the VIPs we invite will receive Him. He will ensure that we will not suffer worldly losses because of our efforts and sacrifices. He will answer our prayers. He will fill us with the joy of living as saved people
