2021년 팀 켈러 목사가 췌장암 진단을 받은 뒤 "이 세상을 천국으로 만들려 하지 않을수록, 오히려 이 세상에서 더 많은 것을 즐길 수 있었다."라고 했답니다. 물 위에 비친 햇살이 눈부시게 다가오고, 꽃병에 꽂힌 평범한 꽃들이 위로가 되기 시작했다고 고백했습니다.
우리는 ‘결핍’ 때문이 아니라 ‘욕망’ 때문에 불행하게 느낍니다. 내가 가질 수 있는 것에 대한 결핍이 아니라, 내가 가질 수 없는 것에 대한 결핍 때문에 불행하게 느낍니다. 어처구니 없게도 내가 가질 필요가 없는 것 때문에 불행을 느끼기도 합니다.
강남의 국민평수 아파트가 70 억에 거래되었다는 기사를 보고 마음이 심란해진 적이 있습니다. 그러다가 정신이 듭니다. “내가 살 가능성이 제로인 아파트 값을 보고 내가 왜 심란해하지?”
그렇습니다. 제가 한국에서 살더라도 강남에서 살 확률은 제로에 가깝습니다. 복잡하고 물가가 비싼 강남보다는 공기좋고 복잡하지 않은 시골에 살고 싶습니다. 강남에 살아보지 않았다면 아쉬움이라도 있겠지만 그것도 아닙니다.
경제적으로 못사는 부탄의 행복지수가 높다는 기사를 본 적이 있습니다. 기대가 낮기 때문입니다. 그런데 지금은 인터넷 보급과 현대화로 인해 타국과의 비교가 가능해지면서 행복지수가 떨어졌다고 합니다.
우리나라를 보면 연세가 높으신 분들이 더 행복해 하시는 것 같습니다. 살기 어려울 때면, “6.25 때도 견뎠는데 뭐…” 하시면서 대수롭지 않게 생각하십니다. 저와 같은 세대분들도 젊은 시절을 생각하면서 어려움을 잘 견딥니다.
그런데 지금 세대는 그런 어려움을 겪지 않은 세대입니다. 경제적으로 결핍을 모르는 세대입니다. 그래서 기대가 높고 가지지 못한 것에 대해 어려워합니다. 이런 세대에게 행복을 바르게 구하는 방법을 가르쳐야 합니다.
가끔 여행을 하는 것입니다. 아무래도 여행을 하면 고생이 됩니다. 그러면 집이나 집밥같이 가진 것에 대한 감사를 할 수 있습니다. 신앙적으로는 금식이나 새벽기도를 작정해서 할 수 있습니다. 평소에 먹었던 음식, 평소에 가졌던 수면이 얼마나 좋았는지 깨달을 수 있습니다.
가장 감사해야 할 것은 임마누엘 예수님입니다. 이 땅에 오신 임마누엘 예수님은 세상 끝날까지 우리와 함께 하시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 세상은 완벽하지 않지만 예수님이 함께 하신다면 은혜 가운데 삽니다. 그러면 그곳이 천국입니다
After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2021, Pastor Tim Keller said, “The less I tried to make this world into heaven, the more I was actually able to enjoy life in this world.” He confessed that sunlight reflecting on the water began to shine brilliantly, and ordinary flowers placed in a vase started to bring him comfort.
We feel unhappy not because of lack, but because of desire. It is not the lack of what we can have that makes us unhappy, but the lack of what we cannot have. Absurdly, we sometimes feel unhappy because of things we do not even need to have.
After reading an article that a standard-sized apartment in Gangnam was sold for 7 billion won, my heart felt unsettled. Then I came to my senses and thought, “Why am I feeling troubled by the price of an apartment I have zero chance of ever living in?”
That’s right. Even if I lived in Korea, the probability of living in Gangnam would be close to zero. Rather than living in crowded and expensive Gangnam, I would prefer to live in the countryside, where the air is fresh and life is less complicated. If I had not lived in Gangnam before, I might feel some regret—but that is not even the case.
I once read an article saying that Bhutan, a country that is not economically wealthy, has a high happiness index. That is because expectations are low. However, with the spread of the internet and modernization, comparison with other countries has become possible, and as a result, their happiness index has reportedly declined.
Looking at our own country, it seems that older people tend to be happier. When life becomes difficult, they say, “We survived the Korean War—this is nothing,” and take things lightly. People of my generation also endure hardships well by remembering their younger days.
But the current generation has not experienced such hardships. It is a generation unfamiliar with economic deprivation. As a result, expectations are high, and they struggle over what they do not have. We must teach this generation the right way to seek happiness.
One way is to travel occasionally. Travel often involves some discomfort, and through that, we become grateful for what we have—like our home and home-cooked meals. Spiritually, we can commit to fasting or early morning prayer. Then we realize how precious the food we usually eat and the sleep we usually enjoy truly are.
Above all, we should be most thankful for Immanuel Jesus. Immanuel Jesus, who came to this earth, promised to be with us until the very end of the age. The world is not perfect, but if Jesus is with us, we live in grace. And then, that place becomes heaven.
