얼마 전에 미국 신학교에 대한 기사를 보았습니다. 신학생이 줄어서 유명한 신학교들도 건물을 파는 등 어려움을 겪고 있다고 합니다. 동성결혼 합법화등 사회적 변화와 교회의 성장주의, 목회자 윤리 문제등이 겹치며 등록생 수가 줄고 있다고 합니다.
한국 신학교들도 마찬가지입니다. 과거에는 유명 신학대학원에 가려면 3 수는 기본이라고 했는데, 지금은 거의 대부분의 학교들이 정원을 채우지 못해서 정원을 줄이고 있다고 합니다.
한국에서 신학생이 줄어든 이유는 미국과는 다릅니다. 기사에 따르면 학령인구 부족과 청년층 이탈, 목회자에 대한 비전 부족과 교회의 부정적 인식 확산 때문이라고 합니다. 특히, 목회자의 언행 불일치, 비민주적 교회 구조가 젊은 세대의 소명 의식 약화를 부채질한 것으로 분석된다고 합니다.
위 분석은 신학생이나 목회자의 문제일 뿐 아니라, 교회 전체적으로 심각한 고민을 던져줍니다. 특히, 우리 이민 교회는 미국과 한국의 문제를 동시에 고려해야 합니다. 가속화 되는 세속화, 교회의 성장주의, 목회자 윤리 문제, 청년층 이탈, 교회의 부정적 인식, 목회자의 언행불일치등 고려해야 할 것이 많습니다.
목회자와 관련해서는 목회자 윤리 문제와 언행불일치가 있습니다. 물론 성도님들도 조심해야 하지만, 목회자가 문제를 일으키면 교회에 치명상을 입히기 때문에 특히 조심해야 합니다. 특히 언행불일치는 설교의 파워를 사라지게 하고 목회자의 권위를 상실하게 합니다.
교회 전체적으로는 세속화와 성장주의와 청년층 이탈과 교회의 부정적 인식등을 고려해야 합니다. 감사하게도, 우리 교회는 성장주의는 그렇게 문제가 되지는 않습니다. 청년층 이탈도 아직까지는 큰 문제가 아닙니다.
문제는 세속화와 교회의 부정적 인식을 극복하는 것입니다. 사회의 세속화를 우리 교회가 바꾸는 것은 거의 불가능합니다. 그러나 사회가 세속화되고 있다는 것을 인식하고 대처할 방안 정도는 갖춰야 합니다. 청소년들에게 끊임없이 경고하고 또 교육할 수 있겠습니다.
교회의 부정적 인식에 대해서는 그래도 할만한 것 같습니다. 현재 우리 교회가 믿지 않는 분들에게 괜찮은 인상을 주고 있다고 생각합니다. 더 노력해서 우리 교회가 사회에 긍정적인 모습을 보인다면 위기가 오히려 기회가 될 것입니다.

Social changes like the legalization of same-sex marriage, the church's growth-oriented approach, and pastoral ethics issues are all contributing to the declining enrollment.
Korean seminaries are no exception. In the past, it was said that three attempts were essential to get into a prestigious seminary, but now, most schools are reportedly reducing their enrollment due to insufficient enrollment.

Immigrant churches, in particular, must consider the issues facing both the United States and Korea. There are many factors to consider, including accelerating secularization, the growth mindset of churches, ethical issues among pastors, the loss of young people, negative perceptions of the church, and the inconsistency between pastors' words and actions.

As for the negative perception of the church, I think we can try. I believe our church currently makes an OK impression on non-believers. If we make more effort to present a positive image of our church in society, this crisis will actually become an opportunity.
