요새 한국에서 ‘왕과 사는 남자’라는 영화가 유행입니다. 지금쯤이면 관객 천만 명을 넘길 것 같은데, 예상 외로 흥행을 하고 있다고 합니다. 오타와에서 ‘왕과 사는 남자’를 상영한다고 해서 지난 화요일에 관람했습니다.

내용은 영월로 유배간 단종과 그 고을 촌장인 엄흥도라는 사람의 이야기입니다. 신분 차이가 많이 나지만, 서로 인간적으로 가까워졌고, 단종이 죽은 뒤에 시신을 묻는 사람에게 사형을 처하겠다는 명령에도 불구하고 엄흥도라는 사람이 단종을 몰래 묻어주었다고 합니다.

영화의 배경을 보면, 어린 조카인 단종을 몰아내고 왕이 된 세조가 있습니다. 거기에 큰 역할을 한 인물이 한명회입니다. 반대로, 명분을 지키려고 거기에 반대하다 죽은 사육신이 있고, 많은 사람들이 단종 복귀를 추진하면서 희생을 당합니다. 그러나 더 많은 사람들이 대세를 좇아서 세조와 한명회의 편에 섭니다.

영화를 보면서 마음이 많이 불편했습니다. 대학교 다닐 때에 전두환 정권을 보면서 가졌던 울분과 무력함이 떠올랐고, 최근 한국 정치상황을 보면서 느낀 분노가 생각났기 때문입니다.

한명회를 보면서 아무 부끄러움 없이 온갖 행패를 저지르는 정치인들이 생각났고, 한명회에게 협력하는 사람들을 보면서 그런 정치인들에 협력하고 만족해 하는 세력들이 생각났습니다.

물론 역사는 세조와 한명회의 편이 아닙니다. 그러나 그때 정의를 추구했던 사람들이 당했던 피해가 너무 큽니다. 좀 더 많은 사람들이 조금 더 저항을 했으면, 그때에 불의를 예방하든지 물리칠 수 있지 않았을까 하는 아쉬움을 가져 봅니다. 그러나 그때 나도 그렇게 했을까라고 질문을 해 보면 자신이 없습니다.

지금 한국 상황도 마찬가지입니다. 지금 상황을 보면서 분노를 한다고는 하지만, 정작 제가 적극적으로 나서지는 않고 있습니다. 그래서 포기하고 있었습니다. 그런데 영화를 보면서 기대가 생겼습니다. 이 영화가 천만 관객 영화가 된 것이 저같은 생각을 가진 사람들이 아직 한국에 많다는 증거일 수 있기 때문입니다.

그래서 기독교에 대한 희망을 가져 봅니다. 아무리 교회와 목회자가 욕을 먹고 있지만, 성도들은 무기력해 보이지만, 여전히 이런 상황에 분노하지만 침묵하고 있는 성도가 다수라는 것입니다. 영화를 보고 조금 위로가 되었습니다.

"The King’ Warden" is a huge hit in Korea these days. It's expected to surpass 10 million viewers by now, exceeding expectations. I saw "The King’s Warden" in Ottawa last Tuesday.

The story revolves around King Danjong, who was banished to Yeongwol, and the village chief there, Eom Heung-do. Despite their vast differences in social standing, they became close on a personal level. After Danjong's death, despite an order threatening the death penalty for anyone who buried his body, Eom Heung-do secretly buried Danjong.

The film's setting depicts King Sejo, who overthrew his young nephew, Danjong, and became king. Han Myeong-hoe played a key role in this. There were the Six Martyred Ministers who died opposing King Sejo's revolt, and many others sacrificed themselves to support Danjong's restoration. However, many more followed the trend and sided with Sejo and Han Myeong-hoe.

Watching the film, I felt deeply uneasy. It reminded me of the resentment and helplessness I felt while watching the Chun Doo-hwan regime during my college years, and the anger I felt watching the recent political situation in Korea.

Looking at Han Myeong-hoe, I thought of politicians who commit all kinds of atrocities without any shame, and looking at those who cooperate with Han Myeong-hoe, I thought of the forces that cooperate with and are satisfied with such politicians.

Of course, history isn't on Sejo's or Han Myeong-hoe's side. However, the damage suffered by those who pursued justice at the time was immense. I regret that if more people had resisted, perhaps they could have prevented or even defeated the injustice. However, when I ask myself whether I would have done the same, I'm not so sure.

The current situation in Korea is no different. I'm outraged by the situation, but I'm not actively taking action. So, I had no hope. But watching the film, I felt hopeful. The fact that this film drew 10 million viewers is proof that there are still many people in Korea who share my perspective.

So, I have hope for Christianity. No matter how much the church and its pastors are criticized, and how helpless the congregation may seem, there are still many who are angry about this situation but remain silent. Watching the film brought me some comfort.
