대학교에 지원할 때 경영학과와 법대 사이에서 고민했습니다. 경영대학을 가면 회사에 취업해서 안정되게 살 수 있을 것 같았고, 법대에 가면 고시를 봐서 판검사나 정부공무원으로 살 확률이 높았습니다. 솔직히 말하면, 고시 공부하기 싫어서 법대가 아닌 경영학을 전공하게 되었습니다.
지금 생각하면 경영학을 전공한 것이 다행입니다. 만일 제가 판사나 검사, 혹은 변호사가 되었더라면 아주 고생을 했을 거라고 생각합니다. 판사가 되었으면 남의 인생을 판결하느라 스트레스를 많이 받았을 것이고, 검사가 되었으면 피의자를 끊임없이 의심하면서 스트레스 받았을 것이고 변호사가 되었으면 의뢰인을 합리화시키느라 힘들었을 것입니다.
특히 판사가 제일 힘들었을 것 같습니다. 판사는 대부분의 경우 어느 한 쪽을 선택해서 판결해야 합니다. 그런데 판결이 정확하지 않을 확률이 높습니다. 가장 실력이 뛰어나다는 대법관의 판결도 만장일치가 아닌 경우가 많고, 1심과 2심의 판결이 뒤집히는 경우도 많습니다.
사실, 가정에서도 판단을 하는 것이 어렵습니다. 아이들이 싸워서 얘기를 들어보면 큰 딸이 얘기하면 큰 딸이 맞는 것 같고, 작은 딸 말을 들어보면 작은 딸 말이 맞는 것 같습니다. 서로의 입장에서 얘기하니까 판단하기 어렵습니다.
사회에서도 마찬가지입니다. 진보와 보수가 생각하는 관점이 다르고, 나이에 따라 보는 눈이 다릅니다. 남자와 여자의 입장이 다르고 고용주와 노동자의 상황이 다릅니다. 그래서 같은 사안을 두고 다른 결정을 내리게 됩니다.
그래도 우리 믿는 사람들은 공평하게 판단하시는 하나님이 계셔서 다행입니다. 어떤 때는 공평하지 않으신 것 같아도 결국에는 공평하십니다. 신분이 높은 사람이나 부자를 편들지 않으시고 오히려 신분이 낮고 가난한 사람 편을 드십니다 (이것이 하나님의 공평입니다).
그래서 어떤 상황이 닥쳐도 공평하신 하나님의 결정이라고 믿기 때문에 담담히 받아들일 수 있습니다. 그리고 기뻐하며 감사할 수 있습니다.
하나님의 가장 위대한 판결은 예수님을 십자가에 달려 돌아가게 하신 것입니다. 우리를 죽을 죄인으로 판결하셨지만, 결국에는 영생을 얻게 하셨습니다. 그 판결의 증거가 예수님의 부활입니다. 그래서 우리가 부활절을 기뻐합니다.
When I was applying for college, I went back and forth between business school and law school. I figured going to business school would lead to a steady job and a stable life, while law school meant a high chance of becoming a judge, prosecutor, or government official after passing the bar. To be honest, I chose business mainly because I didn't want to deal with the intense studying required for the bar exam.
Looking back, I’m glad I went with business. I think I would’ve had a really rough time if I’d become a judge, prosecutor, or lawyer. As a judge, I would’ve been stressed out constantly judging other people’s lives; as a prosecutor, the constant suspicion of defendants would’ve been draining; and as a lawyer, trying to justify every client’s actions would’ve been exhausting.
I think being a judge would have been the hardest of all. In most cases, a judge has to pick a side and make a final call. But there’s a high chance those judgments aren't always accurate. Even decisions from Supreme Court justices—the best of the best—often aren't unanimous, and it’s common to see rulings from the first trial get overturned in the second.
In fact, making judgments is even hard at home. When my kids fight and I listen to them, my older daughter seems right when she’s talking, but then my younger daughter sounds just as right when it’s her turn. Since everyone speaks from their own perspective, it’s tough to judge.
It’s the same in society. Liberals and conservatives see things differently, and perspectives change with age. Men and women have different viewpoints, and the situations of employers and workers are miles apart. That’s why people reach totally different conclusions on the exact same issue.
That’s why, as believers, we’re lucky to have a God who judges fairly. Even when things don't seem fair in some cases, He is fair in the end. He doesn’t play favorites with the powerful or the rich; instead, He takes the side of the lowly and the poor—that is what God’s fairness looks like.
Because of this, no matter what happens, we can accept it calmly knowing it’s the decision of a fair God. We can even find joy and be thankful.
God’s greatest judgment was letting Jesus die on the cross. He judged us as sinners bound for death, but in the end, He gave us eternal life. The proof of that judgment is Jesus’ resurrection. And that is why we celebrate Easter with such joy.
