지난 4월 13일부터 16일까지 밴쿠버에서 열린 140차 목회자 컨퍼런스에 다녀왔습니다. 이번 컨퍼런스는 밴쿠버 지역의 네 교회가 연합하여 함께 섬겼습니다. 자기 교회 건물 하나 없는 교회들이, 교단도 규모도 달랐지만 하나가 되어 섬기는 모습이 감동이 되었습니다.

토론토에서 처음 참석하신 한 목사님이 이런 말씀을 하셨습니다. "이 모임은 이상하다." 지금껏 한 번도 경험하지 못한 목회자들의 모임이라는 뜻이었습니다. 신약교회 회복이라는 공동의 목표 아래, 서로를 성공시켜 주려는 모습을 보면서 그것이 그분에게 낯설고도 감동이었던 것입니다.

이번 컨퍼런스에서 배운 것을 몇 가지만 나누면 이렇습니다. 많은 목회자들이 가정교회 세미나에 왔다 갔지만 실제로 가정교회를 하고 있는 교회는 30% 정도라고 합니다. 그 이유는 많은 교회들이 목장이라는 '시스템'만 도입하면 된다고 생각했기 때문이며, 결국 잘 되지 않아 포기하는 경우가 많다는 것입니다. 가정교회는 시스템이 아니라 '정신'이 핵심입니다. 영혼 구원과 제자 삼기, 삶으로 보여주는 훈련, 목회자와 평신도의 사역 분담, 종의 리더십이라는 네 가지 정신이 사역 전반에 녹아 있어야 가정교회가 잘 된다는 것입니다. 그래서 우선 이런 정신을 성도들이 갖도록 토양 작업을 하는 것이 중요하다는 것입니다.

또한 가정교회가 정체를 넘어 한 단계 레벨업 하기 위해서는, 먼저 성도들 안에 '우리 교회 참 좋다'라고 말할 수 있는 자부심이 있어야 한다고 합니다. 그리고 영혼구원과 섬김의 에너지가 분출될 곳이 필요한데, 그 좋은 방법이 단기선교라는 것입니다. 또한 기도회—새벽기도, 수요기도, 세겹줄 기도, 다니엘 금식기도—를 통해 기도응답을 직접 경험해야 한다는 것입니다.

저희 교회는 가정교회를 시작한 지 9년째가 되어 갑니다. 잘 정착되어 왔고 잘 하고 있어 감사가 됩니다. 그러나 한 단계 더 나아가야 할 시점에 있다고 생각합니다. 그래서 네 가지 정신이 우리 사역 전반에 제대로 녹아 있는지 점검하고, 단기선교와 하나님을 전적으로 의지하는 기도에 더욱 힘써야 함을 마음에 새기고 왔습니다.

이번 컨퍼런스에서 가장 마음에 남은 것은 목사와 목자의 동역에 관한 것이었습니다. 목자가 VIP를 데려올 때 '목사님께 맡기면 된다'는 믿음을 가질 수 있어야 한다는 것이었습니다. 결국 목사가 먼저 그 신뢰를 삶과 사역으로 쌓아가야하고. 좋은 동역은 서로를 향한 믿음에서 시작된다는 것입니다. 아직 담임목사로서의 자리에 서지는 않았지만, 앞으로 목자들이 그런 믿음을 가질 수 있는 목회자가 되도록 더욱 힘써야겠다고 기도했습니다. 저를 위해 함께 기도해 주시면 감사하겠습니다.

I had the privilege of attending the 140th Pastors' Conference held in Vancouver from April 13 to 16. This conference was hosted jointly by four churches in the Vancouver area. Each of these churches has no building of their own, and yet churches of different denominations and sizes became one to serve together — and that was deeply moving.

A pastor attending for the first time from Toronto said this: "This gathering is strange." He meant it as the highest compliment — that he had never experienced a gathering of pastors quite like this one. Seeing fellow pastors genuinely trying to help one another succeed, all under the shared vision of restoring the New Testament church, was both unfamiliar and deeply touching to him.

Here are a few things I learned at this conference. Though many pastors have come and gone through house church seminars over the years, only about 30% are actually practicing house church ministry today. The reason is that many churches thought it was enough simply to adopt the house church as a "system" — and when it didn't work as expected, many gave up. The truth is, house church is not about the system; it's about the "spirit." The four core principles — winning souls and making disciples, training through lived example, shared ministry between pastor and laity, and servant leadership — must be woven into every aspect of ministry for house church to truly flourish. That is why laying the groundwork and instilling this spirit in the congregation first is so essential.

To break through a plateau and level up in house church ministry, the congregation first needs a genuine sense of pride — the kind where members can say with confidence, "I really love our church." Beyond that, there needs to be an outlet for the energy of soul-winning and service, and short-term mission is one of the best ways to provide it. Prayer gatherings — early morning prayer, Wednesday prayer, threefold cord prayer, Daniel fasting prayer — are also vital, because the congregation needs to experience answered prayer firsthand

Our church is entering its ninth year of house church ministry, and I am truly grateful that it has taken root well. Yet I believe we are at a point where we need to move to the next level. So I came back with a renewed commitment: to examine whether the four core principles are truly woven into every aspect of our ministry, and to press forward with greater intentionality in short-term mission and prayer that depends wholly on God.

What stayed with me most from this conference was the partnership between pastor and shepherds. When shepherds bring a VIP to church, they need to be able to trust — "I can leave it in my pastor's hands from here." And it is the pastor who must first earn that trust through his life and ministry. In the end, good partnership begins with mutual faith in one another. I have not yet stepped into the role of senior pastor, but I prayed that I would become the kind of pastor in whom shepherds can place that trust.
