요새 한국의 형편이 좋아지면서 미국으로 이민 오는 분들이 줄었고, 동시에 한국으로 역이민 가는 사람이 많아져서 미국 이민자 숫자가 마이너스가 되었다고 합니다. 그래서 미국 이민 교회가 외국인에게 전도해야 한다는 말을 들었습니다.

이민에 대한 문제는 캐나다도 비슷한 것 같습니다. 거기다가 세계적으로 젊은 사람들이 교회에 다니는 비율이 낮습니다. 우리 주위에도 아직 예수님을 모르는 한국분들이 있지만, 예수님을 모르는 외국 사람들이 훨씬 많습니다.

저 개인적으로도 그렇게 느꼈던 경험이 있습니다. 학생부 학생들에게 전도하라고 하니까, “제 주위에는 한국인 친구가 없어요.”라고 대답하곤 했습니다. 그때 우리교회가 외국인들에게 전도해야겠다는 마음이 들었습니다.

그후, 학생부와 주일학교에 외국 학생들이 오기 시작했고, 목장에서 외국분들을 전도하기 시작했습니다. 그리고 두 개의 싱글 목장이 영어권으로 모이고 있습니다. 영어로 삶공부를 제공하기 시작했고, 예배도 영어로 통역하고 있습니다.

그런데 외국분들을 섬기는 목장에서 문제를 얘기하기 시작했습니다. 아무래도 영어로 통역된 설교를 듣는 것이 충분히 와닿지 않는다는 것이고, 예배에 와도 자기 교회라는 마음이 들지 않는다는 것이었습니다. 그래서 영어예배를 따로 드렸으면 하는 제안을 하셨습니다.

세가지 방식을 생각해 보았습니다. 첫번째는 지금 드리는 주일 예배를 전부 영어로 하는 것입니다. 두번째는  4시 15분에 영어 예배를 따로 드리는 것입니다. 세번째는 같이 예배를 드리다가 설교 시간에 지하 카페로 내려가서 설교를 영어로 하는 것입니다.

지난 운영위원회에서 세번째 방식, 즉 같이 예배를 드리다가 설교만 따로 카페에서 하는 것으로 결정했습니다. 일단 매달 세번째 주일 한 번만 그렇게 하고, 괜찮으면 앞으로 횟수를 늘려나갈 예정입니다.

5월 17일 주일부터 시작합니다. 지금 계획으로는 헌금찬양을 할 때 학생부는 내려가지 않고 차드목장과 영어권 싱글들이 아래로 내려갑니다. 학생부 영어권 학생들을 위해 영어 통역은 계속 제공될 것입니다.

세부적으로 고려해야 할 것도 많고 준비할 것도 많습니다. 영어권 예배가 잘 정착되어서 영어권 사람들에게 예수님을 잘 전할 수 있도록 기도해 주시고 협력해 주시기를 부탁드립니다.

I heard that recently, as the economic situation in Korea has improved, the number of people immigrating to the U.S. has decreased, while at the same time, the number of people returning to Korea has increased, resulting in a net decrease in the number of immigrants to the U.S. For this reason, I heard that immigrant churches in the U.S. need to evangelize to foreigners.

The issue of immigration seems to be similar in Canada. Furthermore, the rate of young people attending church is low globally. While there are still Koreans around us who do not know Jesus, there are far more foreigners who do not know Him.

I have personally experienced this as well. When I asked the students in the youth group to evangelize, they would often reply, “I don’t have any Korean friends around me.” That was when I felt the urge for our church to evangelize to foreigners.

Since then, foreign students began attending the youth ministry and Sunday school, and we started evangelizing to foreigners in our small group ministries. Additionally, two English single Mokjangs are gathering. We have started offering life studies in English, and we are also interpreting worship services into English.

However, the leaders in MokJangs serving foreigners began to bring up an issue. They felt that listening to sermons interpreted into English did not fully resonate with them, and that even when they came to worship, they did not feel like it was their own church. Therefore, they suggested holding a separate English service.

We have considered three methods. The first is to conduct the current Sunday service entirely in English. The second is to hold a separate English service at 4:15. The third is to worship together, then go down to the basement cafe and deliver the sermon in English.

At the last Steering Committee meeting, we decided on the third method: worshipping together and then delivering the sermon separately at a cafe. For now, we will do this only once on the third Sunday of every month, and if it goes well, we plan to increase the frequency in the future.

It begins on Sunday, May 17th. Under the current plan, the Youth Ministry will not go down during the offering praise; instead, the Chad Ranch and English-speaking singles will go down. English interpretation will continue to be provided for the English-speaking students in the Youth Ministry.

There are many details to consider and many things to prepare. I ask for your prayers and cooperation so that the English-language worship service may become well-established and we may effectively share Jesus with English-speaking people.
