지난 주일, 주일학교에서 아이들이 손꼽아 기다리던 달란트 시장이 열렸습니다. 1년 동안 모은 달란트 포인트로 선물을 고르고, 목장 식구들이 정성껏 준비한 음식을 나누는 날. 아이들에게는 아마 1년 중 가장 설레는 날일 것입니다. 그런데 올해는 특별히 더 풍성했습니다. 어린이들이 친구들을 적극적으로 초청한 덕분에 무려 26명의 VIP 친구들이 함께했습니다. 역대급이라는 표현이 부족하지 않을 만큼 놀라운 숫자였습니다.

이번 달란트 시장에서 눈에 띈 것이 있었습니다. 참여한 친구들 가운데 한국 아이들보다 다민족 배경의 아이들이 더 많았다는 사실입니다. 우리 자녀들 주변에는 한국 아이들이 많지 않습니다. 그래서 자연스럽게 다민족을 향해 방향을 돌려야 하는데, 특별히 주일학교 자녀들을 통해 그 부모님들에게도 접촉할 수 있는 좋은 통로가 된다는 것을 이번에 다시 확인했습니다.

자녀를 데려다 주러 왔다가 안내를 통해 어른 예배에도 참석한 분이 다섯 분이나 되었습니다. 그 가운데는 이란 부부와 중국인 두 명이 있었는데, 교회를 처음 방문했음에도 깊은 관심을 보였습니다. 그래서 내년부터는 달란트 마켓을 주일학교 행사로만 국한하지 말고, 아이들의 부모님을 위한 안내도 잘 준비하고 그날 예배도 VIP를 맞이하는 마음으로 준비하면 더욱 좋겠다는 생각을 했습니다.

그리고 개인적으로 작은 해프닝 하나가 있었습니다. 혜민이가 초청한 이란 가정의 딸 니란의 어머니가 초청장에 적힌 'Talent Market'이라는 표현을 보고, 바이올린을 가져와서 장기자랑을 해도 되냐고 연락을 해왔습니다. 'Talent'를 '재능'으로 이해한 것입니다. 웃음이 나오면서도, 우리가 당연하게 쓰는 말들이 처음 오는 분들에게 얼마나 다르게 들릴 수 있는지를 새삼 생각하게 되었습니다. 앞으로 영어로는 'Reward Market'이나 'Token Market'처럼 뜻이 분명하게 전달되는 표현을 사용하는 것도 좋겠다는 생각도 했습니다. 

무엇보다 이번 달란트 시장을 위해 수고한 모든 주일학교 선생님들께 진심으로 감사합니다. 이동희 부장선생님, 김우경, 오현주, 박성은, 최신애 선생님이 물심양면 너무 수고하셨습니다. 보조교사로 섬겨준 유스 학생들도 보이지 않는 곳에서 잘 섬겨줬습니다. 그리고 음식으로 섬겨준 목장 식구들의 헌신이 아이들과 처음 온 가정들에게 따뜻한 첫인상이 되었을 것입니다.

이번에 교회를 처음 찾아온 26명의 VIP 친구들이 믿음의 씨앗이 되어 자라나기를 기대합니다. 우리 주일학교에 더 많은 관심을 가져 주시고, 주일학교에서 선생님으로 함께 섬길 분들도 필요합니다. 기도하며 생각해 보시고 헌신해 주시면 참 감사하겠습니다 

Last Sunday, our Sunday School held the Talent Market — the day our children look forward to all year long. It's the day they get to pick out gifts using the talent points they've collected over the year, and enjoy food lovingly prepared by our cell group members. For the kids, it's probably the most exciting day of the year. And this year was especially abundant.

Thanks to the children actively inviting their friends, a record-breaking 26 VIP friends joined us — a truly remarkable number.

One thing that stood out at this year's Talent Market was that more children from multi-ethnic backgrounds participated than Korean children. The reality is that there aren't many Korean children in the circles our kids move in. This naturally points us toward reaching out to other ethnicities, and this event confirmed once again that our Sunday School children can serve as a wonderful bridge to connect us with their parents.

Five parents who had simply come to drop off their children ended up staying for the adult worship service after being personally invited by our greeters. Among them were an Iranian couple and two Chinese individuals, all visiting a church for the very first time — and yet they showed a deep level of interest. This got me thinking: starting next year, we should expand the Talent Market beyond just a Sunday School event. With better preparation for parents and a worship service designed with VIP guests in mind, this could become an even more powerful outreach opportunity.

There was also a small personal episode. Nilan's mother — Nilan being the daughter of the Iranian family that Hyemin invited — saw 'Talent Market' on the invitation and reached out to ask if she could bring a violin and perform a talent show. She had understood 'talent' in the everyday sense of the word. It made me smile, but it also reminded me how easily the terms we take for granted can be misunderstood by those coming for the first time. Going forward, a name like 'Reward Market' or 'Token Market' might communicate the idea more clearly.

Above all, I want to sincerely thank all the Sunday School teachers who worked so hard to make this happen. Director  Donghee Lee, and teachers Wookyung Kim, Hyunjoo Oh, Sungeun Park, and Shinae Choi poured themselves into this in every way. Our youth students who served as assistant teachers also gave quietly behind the scenes. And to all Mokjang (house church) members who donated foods — your generosity surely made a warm first impression on the children and families who were visiting for the first time.

We look forward to seeing the 26 VIP friends who walked through our doors for the first time grow into seeds of faith. We invite you to take a greater interest in our Sunday School, and we are in need of teachers who will commit to serving alongside us.
